Stephen Colbert spoke tonight at the dinner and lampooned pretty much everything he could think of and Helen Thomas. I used the second half of his performance because it included the Generals, Scalia, the Faux press briefing and as E&P reported:
"As he walked from the podium the president and First Lady gave Colbert quick nods, unsmiling, and left. E&P's Joe Strupp, in the crowd, observed that quite a few felt the material was, perhaps, uncomfortably biting."

"Colbert complained that he was "surrounded by the liberal media who are destroying this country, except for Fox News. Fox believes in presenting both sides-the president's side and the vice president's side."

He noted former Ambassador Joseph Wilson in the crowd, as well as " Valerie Plame." Then, pretending to be worried that he had named her, he corrected himself, as Bush aides might do, "Uh, I mean... Joseph Wilson's wife." He asserted that it might be okay, as prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald was probably not there.

Yeah heard Colbert acted like a douche bag on stage and very few people were laughing.

This should be in the Political Playpen.

Watched this the other day, it was one of the most ballsy/funny things I have seen in a while. For some reason, people are agruing about whether or not the audience was laughing, but C-Span has shitty microphones and he was making fun of them anyway. Half the funny was seeing their shocked expressions.

Yeah I watched it, he was getting zero laughs. Im not sure how he had the fortitude to ramble on. It was pretty depressing

That's the best part!!! the lack of laughter was awesome!

He's standing there dumping all over them all, and they are politely taking it. He even got the cold shoulder from the pres and first lady, it as priceless. That's just ballsy to the Nth degree.. I'd be watching my back and keeping a very random schedule for the next few months or so if I were him.

Yeah almost as funny as Gilbert Gottfried's 9/11 jokes at Hugh Hefners Roast in New York in 2001. Not funny and lots of uncomfortable silence.

This may get ugly.

Moved to the playpen.

I am offended that he had the gall to tell such lies in front of the president. Apparently nobody at the dinner thought he was funny, so I don't think he's funny either.

BTW I'm seeding this torrent I found of the WHOLE thing. It includes that president look-alike they talk about in the news. The colbert this is toward the end.

Makes me wonder whether torrenting public services like C-SPAN violates copyright law... not that I particularly care..

I loved the uncomfortable looks on everyone's faces. I haven't been a big fan of Colbert, but most of his jokes were pretty good. The press secretary video was kind of lame though.

It takes some hard huevos to talk shit like that right there next to the president. He only breaks the routine once, when he does the half-empty glass joke.

Not really, what recourse can they take against him? none

Now if he was to go to say Red China or some other place with a dictator and say some shit about them at a conference when they were there, then I would be impressed. ITs not like everyone doesnt know that hes a satirist.Nobody takes anything he says seriously. Ill wager that the room he was speaking too was 90% liberal Dems. There was no risk involved, therefore how hard did his huevos, as you called them really need to be? Lets see him make a Muhammad joke in Syria?

Thank god for a democracy like ours that lets unfunny people like colbert speak their minds

Well I'm a big pussy, I have trouble saying mean things to anyone's face. So maybe my opinion there is off.

- IRS audit
- make him the new Iraq ambassador
- tell the country that George loves Colbert's stuff
