OK, i am going to my aunts house for Thanksgiving, and she wants me to transform her old records into cd's. So, i was thinking that i could route the speaker wires from her Turntable, and input then into my computer, and then use a free, or cheap Recording Program to record the music, and then burn it onto cd's. First of all, do you think this process will work? And, second do you know of any free Programs i can use?? Thank You.

the only thing to worry about is the voltages on the wiring
if the turntable is meant for powered speakers, there shouldn't be a problem cause it doesn't jack up what it's sending... bad part is, most turntables AREN'T meant for powered speakers and amp the sound WAY up.. which could cause anything from a short to a bad recording.. it's suggest running the turntable through another stereo with a headphones out then headphones out to computer mic in then play the record and listen to it through the computer speakers to get the levels right
as for recording programs... erm, the only ones i know of for sure are things like cakewalk.. and they might be a bit more than your after

so, connect route the 'headphones out', to the 'mic in'?

the headphones out on the secondary stereo *since it is closer to the right levels for what yer after* to the mic in on the computer

I'd try line-in, rather than mic. Line-in is meant for powered input. I'd suggest trying the program that comes with Easy CD creator. I forget what it's called, but I remember that it has all sorts of options for encoding mp3s from records. Remove whine, scratch sounds, etc.
