Well, I'm in the market for a new T.V. With Prices falling on HDTV's I figured I would buy one of these bad boys. I'm most likely in the market for a DLP tv, because you get the most bang for your buck. Now my question is, is there anything in paticular that is needed on a T.V. I know it should be HDTV ready so you don't have to buy an extra box. Also, would I need to buy a new DVD player to get the full effect, i have an old sony from many many years ago. I hear the Samsungs are good for DLP, as well as Sony and Mitsubishi. Any input and/or suggestions/comments would be greatly appreciated.

You really need to just go and look at a lot of sets.. I'll for one will NEVER buy a DLP set after watching a friends new 50inch Samsung with the so called newest of the new DLP tech in it..

blah!! Rainbow lines all over the place if I looked away for a second and looked back or if I looked at the screen out of the corner of my eye. Never mind the lack of viewing angles, walking to get some thing from the fridge, can't watch the game being the screen is near back unless you are 100% right in front of it.

Yeah yeah I know it's cheaper by about 1/2 from LCD or plasma size but that rainbow effect (not everyone can see it) really sucks.

he ended up taking it back and getting a 42inch plasma..

I still have no idea WTF I want in a tv now being there are so many sizes and so many techs.. Leaning sort of towards a 45inch sharp LCD but geeesh $$$$ so pass.. Maybe a 50inch plasma from panisonic but they still in the 3k+ range.. Meh.. Maybe a cheaper (sub 2k) smaller set and fig the 2k saved now will buy a whoop ass set a few years from now. Hell Costco has a KILLER looking bravia (sp?) sony LCD for $1500 but then it's a 32 inch set..

so I just keep waiting still.. Maybe next year when they drop yet again in price.

for now I would hit http://www.avsforum.com/ and dig around..

tuner box is nice, unless you plan to just use a DVR of some sort anyways. Most sets are starting to have a tuner being that new law forced a set % of sets over 32 inches to have one with in a model line.

Yeah, i read about the rainbow effect. I looked at Circuit city today, they just look really nice. I didnt see any rainbow at the few that i looked at. I probally wont get a plasma cause I hear that they die after a while, was thinking about getting an LCD, My boss got a 32 incher for 1700, but for 1700 i can get a huge DLP. Next time i go i'll look at the angel thing, didnt really do that. I just like that they are decently thin, and are huge.

Edit: Im a total noob at this stuff, so if I'm not making much sense on what I'm saying just let me Know and I'll try and clarify a bit more.

blah, they are now rated to something like 60,000 hours and that's not til they die, that is the expect 1/2 brightness.. geeeeesh that is something like 8 hours a day for 20+ years..

do you really plan to keep it 20+ years? Do you have your tv from 1986now? It is still nice? Can you replace it same for same tech level for $200 now?

the problem with plasma is they have heavy vs LCD and have glare issues in well lite rooms. LCD is flat paper looking with zero glare.. Then again in dark rooms LCD can lose black levels and plasma really pops.. All of that is subjective of course..

for me, I've started to lean towards a bigger LCD being they have better bigger resolution the plasma and that would be better hooked up to a home PC or a HTPC with light gaming maybe? Then 10 years later I could still find some dumb use for it..

Still might get a smaller LCD now, then fig in a few years I can make that a den tv and buy yet another bigger and better screen.. Ah but even then, 2k 37inch or maybe a sub $1500 "cheapy" set and again, back that other 1k for the upgrade in a year or so..

Sharp 37 for 2k..

sigh.. then again sooner or later I will have to leap to a PCI express cpu set up or at least do some $$$ upgrades, still going to need a new car sooner or later (well new to me) etc etc etc..

of course then again, every guy has a huge lets of "toys" they want. Like mykul and his ATV etc etc etc

edit.. As the for rainbow on DLP.. you might not even see it really. I only saw it doing quick scans away from the screen then back.. When sitting right in front of the TV and just watching a film, it was pretty cool for the cost..

reading through the forum that dl posted, it looks like the upper side of plasma are cheaper than lcd and last 60 thousand hours as opposed to lcd's 70 - 90 thousand hours.. but as they pointed out, 60 thousand hours is like 6 hours every day for 20 years of solid tv watching... course I plan on running something other than tv and movies through a tv should I ever get one that can display decently.. so plasma is definetly out due to the whole burn in with static images and such.

fill lcd has always been what I really wanted.. well since I first started looking into em that is, but yeah, the rainbow and the viewing angle on the projections just kills me, even the better ones you stand to the side and can really only see the very center of the screen

2006 replacement for the LC45GD7U

1920x1080i and they are saying it will be able to run off cpu no problem where as the older version needs a work around.. I want it!!

errrrrrrrrr but I think it will be $$$$. I like to dream big but I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up with something from costco for under 2k but not sure what.. Even the lamest new set will be better then what I have now.

I'm not a DLP fan myself. I have a 60" Sony Grand Wega, Rear Projection LCD. The only thing I really ntice is that the "Blacks" are black. Almost to black/dark. Not always, but, over all, this TV is amazing.

Plasma is nice but, Cost is way up there for the BIG ones, butyou can get a dam nice plasma for a good price now.

Things to consider

1. Size vs cost vs technology ( Plasma, Rear LCD, DLP )

2. What looks good to you. This is the most important

3. Get the warranty. Always fucks up the cost, but it's piece of mind
