Mexico Halts Border Maps Hand-Out By MARK STEVENSON, Associated Press Writer
1 hour, 18 minutes ago
MEXICO CITY - Mexico will suspend its plan to distribute maps to migrants wanting to cross the U.S. border illegally, but an official said Thursday the decision was not made because of American pressure.
Miguel Angel Paredes, spokesman for the federal Human Rights Commission, said the government wanted to "rethink" its plan because human rights officials in border states expressed concern that the maps would show anti-immigrant groups — like the Minutemen civilian patrols — where migrants likely would gather.
"This would be practically like telling the Minutemen where the migrants are going to be," Paredes said. "We are going to rethink this, so that we wouldn't almost be handing them over to groups that attack migrants."
On Wednesday, U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said the United States opposed the plan "in the strongest terms." He said the effort would lead more people to cross the border, "leading to more migrant deaths and the further enrichment of the criminal human trafficking rings."
Paredes was asked if the Mexican decision was a response to U.S. pressure.
"No, we are not responding to that," he said. "We have not taken that into account."
The commission, a Mexican government-funded agency with independent powers, originally said it would print and pay for at least 70,000 maps showing highways, rescue beacons and water tanks in the Arizona desert.
The posters were to have been distributed in border towns and through human rights offices in Mexico starting in March, when illegal border crossings are usually high.
The commission denied the maps would encourage illegal immigration, saying instead they would help guide those in trouble.
Now, the group will "seek other ways" to help migrants, Paredes said.
The map dispute follows a string of other diplomatic rows involving the U.S.-Mexico border.
U.S. border states say they are fed up with illegal migration and drug trafficking and are pressuring the U.S. government to boost protection, including by extending a wall along the common frontier, something Mexico bitterly resents.
Mexico is angry about U.S. civilian groups that have organized patrols along the border and has accused them of attacking migrants.
However, there is little evidence of that and the groups seldom — if ever — target water tanks or rescue beacons.
One of the most well-known groups, the Minuteman Civil Defense Corps, placed a link to the maps on its Web site but did not advocate using them to find illegal migrants.
The posters were designed by the Tucson, Ariz.-based rights group Humane Borders, which operates several desert water stations. The group previously distributed about 100 posters in the Mexican border town of Sasabe.
Some of the posters have warnings, such as: "Don't go. There isn't enough water."
However, officials conceded many migrants were unlikely to heed the advice.

I'm reminded of that douche bag geraldo drawing the map in the sand on the news and then getting kicked out of Iraq. But you know what.... the Mexican military will probably start escorting illegals, they already come onto american soil as it is, and they'll end up getting into a firefight with these militia groups. I'd like to see what happens when the mexican military kills an american on our own soil. Fuck those pieces of shit...

I'd say we go "Seven Cities of Gold" on their asses and start conquering fools like the Conquistadors did before us.
Boy, talk about an inflammatory comment... hehe!

What makes these people so special that they can get away with helping others break the law? Unless of course illegal immigration isn’t illegal anymore? I guess as long as something is trendy and liberal it doesn’t really matter if it’s illegal or not. Someone should drag these fucks out and shoot them in the face. Hell, they are already in the desert so half the clean-up work is already done. Better yet pay some illegal to do it as I’m sure a few $100 bills is worth more to them than the lives of a few gringos.

Do they sell the water at those stations? If so, they could just say that they sell water to whomever wanders in, and that they obviously made posters in an effort to drum up business. As long as it's capitalism, anything flies.

Ok call me the bleeding heart blah blah blah... but seriously it shouldn't be illegal for any human being to reside anywhere they want on this planet. But would be funny if the CIA set up shop selling the maps just so the minute men could ambush em....

So what you're sayin' is that we should just open up all the borders, and let anyone come on in here w/o any kind of monitoring or anything?

in a perfect world yes.. but in that perfect world you and i wouldn't have to pay for their lazy asses to sit around and pop out kids as a way of raising their income (once you squeeze out 3 little shits you make quite a bit from aid and welfare checks.. it's amazing)
but this not being a perfect world.. machine gun nests every 1000' is the only answer
last figure I heard was 700 dollars per illegal to hold and return them. If that same amount of illegals were just shot 2' into our soil it's be what, 3 bucks for the 20 50 cal bullets that rattle off, and maybe 300 bucks a day per soldier?
no mail in rebate required
sounds like a deal
light em up!
of course for some reason this will never come to pass... as the US is the only major power without a militarily controlled border. We don't even have a single sam site for fucks sake.. oo we have radar.. and nukes
Ask new york if it had a sam site handy when it was needed.... or the pentigon for that matter, you'd think at least the pentigon would have had a fucking sam on hand!
then again our poor military has been neutered all to shit.. used to be just driving in the middle of a military convoy was a killable offense, they could drag you out of your car and shoot you. or just shoot your car until it and you stopped moving.. but what if it's just some soccer mom that got caught in the wrong lane?! people screamed... and the crys of, well what if it's not were of course ignored because they didn't have puppies and flag waving patriots in them.... *kicks the stupid people of the country he lives in*
but I'm not bitter.....

Obviously this is not GM posting under chrono's account...:)
I agree, why is it we catch the most flak/opinion for our wanting to close or at least control our borders from nations that have military controled borders and ZERO immagration legal or otherwise. I think the motorized kill turrets about 500 meters inside our borders and gun them down on our soil that wat they are the invaders. (the automated turrets would cut down on the manpower required to enforce the borders thus gaining a lower cost of maintance...a better ROI)
/rant off
for the record I am not against LEGAL immagration. My great grandfather legaly immagrated from Germany in the 1920's.

blah... illegal immigration is just a nice sounding board for politicians to rant and bounce sound bites off with total impunity being illegals of course, can't vote.
money for money it's so far a down on the list of 'wrongs that needs to be fixed' that it's almost a joke.. Sure, California gets the shaft as the feds past laws etc then just expect states to pick up the tab. Oh but god forbid non-border states help pay for those programs even when over all immigration is a USA issue more then just a Texas, Florida, California issue.
So pound away on the issues being it safe. Don't touch huge money issues like prison reform, drug legalization and REALLY don't even sort of kind of mention social security reform or any health care issues at all. Domestic welfare bleeds money and it's mostly poor whites born here, not a Mexican who sneaks and **gasp** gets a job doing some crap no one else wants to do.
Acting like that's a huge problem being the answer to fix it is simple where as the real big problems are more complicated so they get ducked.

When you gonna sack up & run for State Assembly man? You'll get at least 30 votes right here... only need to get enough votes in your community to get on there. You'd have to cut the mullet though before soliciting door to door at the rest home neighborhood.

let see..
Let see, republican to the core as far as hand off government.. Everything pretty much comes down to a cost issue with me..
Anti-death penalty (costs)
pro choice (not my body)
pro drug legalization (costs)
pro prostitution legalization (victimless)
anti gun control (does not work)
English only for everything (learn or leave)
hard core social security reform (busted system)
Massive prison release program to house arrest for none violent offenders. (cost)
Legalize gay marriage (who cares)
that's a pretty un-winnable platform right there.. Never mind being agnostic, another kiss of death..
