Okay my BF got a new system and we are putting it together but no matter what we do it will not load to the point of letting us put the OS on it.. Its an AMD 2400 thoroghbread on a k7vta3 board.. I was wondering if anyone can give me any ideas of things to try to get his system up and running so he stays off mine..

The computer will get to where it dects the IDE drives and then it goes into a sleep mode... the fans stay on but the computer shuts itself down.. WE have taken the main board and the processor back to frys and got diffrent ones just to make sure it was not them but it still is not working right.. I am at a loss so I am comming to you guys knowing that SOMEONE can help me here...

Thanks Guys...

Lemme see, an ECS K7VTA3 mobo, good stuff.

Sounds like you have more than one HD, have you just tried with one as a test?

Any other IDE cards?

okay here is what I have pluged in at this moment:

1. Hard Drive
2. Floppy Drive
3. CD-R
4. Video Card

also all the normal BS: ram, processor, and power cords (duh yea I know thats a no brainer)

I double checked that the power supply had the right wattage and it does so please let me know what you think I would really like to get this system out of here and get my BF off my system..

Ok...first off I have to get this out of my system. ECS stuff is total JUNK and if I am correct it's a VIA chipset. If you want a solid motherboard for a great price get a Shuttle Nforce2 based board. Can be had for under $65 and it has all the good stuff onboard. 95% of your problems will then be solved IMO.

Back to your current problem-o....

Start with the bare minimum plugged into the board to get it to POST. Unplug the floopy, CD and Hard drives because you don't need them to boot the machine. Are you using a USB based keyboard? Try switching to a PS/2...ECS boards have been known to have issues with USB keyboards.

If you can get the machine to post with just video, ram and processor then start adding things back to the machine one at a time. Then isolate which item is causing the problem.

If you can't get it past going to 'sleep' then I would think you have a bios configuration issue. Does the bios properly recognize the CPU as a +2400? If it doesn't you need to go into the bios and properly set it. Also disable any on-board RAID, serial ports, parallel ports, etc to eliminate issues.

Then rinse and repeat...until you figure out what is failing.

Almost sounds like the PS to me...

Anyway, you can get into the BIOS, right? If so, then I would start by disconnecting everything, then replace only what's essential to booting the system up to get to the BIOS. You should only have a keyboard, vid card, monitor (duh!), one memory stick (and then swap with the other if there are more than one): No mouse, no floppy, no CD drive, no HDD. Does it get into the BIOS? Then...

Connect the floppy, boot up with a DOS floppy - can you get to a DOS prompt? Leave it connected.
Connect 1 CD drive, then boot to a DOS floppy and make sure it loads the CD-ROM drive - does it work? Leave it connected.
If you can't get this far but the floppy works, I'd try flashing the BIOS.
If it does get this far, boot up with the OS CD (still no HD) and see what it does. If it works, shut down and connect one HDD and see what happens.
Good luck!

Why would I have anything to say? It's not like I have a problem with AMD. I think that they are great systems, often out performing comparably equipped Inte......

Holy shit, not quite sure what happened there. I think that I blacked out for a sec.

BTW........

REPLACE THAT AMD SHIT WITH HIGH QUALITY INTEL GOODS AND I'M SURE THAT YOU WON'T HAVE ANY PROBLEMS!!!!!!!!

If I could replace it I would this damn is pissin me off but its not my system.. I love my P3 850 even though it is a bit outdated it runs well... now if my hard drives ran as well as my processor I would be in wonderful shape...

But anyhow if every one is done knocking my bfs AMD board I need some help I tried the things listed above and still no change.. I am wondering if maybe the case and power supply are the problem but I truely do not wish to make ANOTHER trip to frys to return yet another peice of this computer I have returned almost everything once already...

All this from the guy whos 'high quality' Intel system couldn't get his onboard Intel Gig NIC working with a Intel Gig switch. Can't get his mouse to work without rebooting a bunch of times...should I go on?

If I recall we narrowed the network problem down to the switch not being set up properly.

As far as the mouse.....Not quite sure what you are talking about there. Maybe you have me confused with somebody else. I've never had a problem with my mouse.

So yes...Please go on.
