CIA agents reveal interrogation tactics

Sat Nov 19, 3:56 AM ET

WASHINGTON, (AFP) -
CIA agents have revealed details of six interrogation tactics approved by top brass for use at secret CIA jails in Asia and Eastern Europe, ABC News reported.

The techniques have lead to questionable confessions and the death of one man since March 2002, the network said, after interviewing current and former CIA officials.

Former CIA officer Bob Baer told ABC the techniques amounted to "bad interrogation. I mean, you can get anyone to confess to anything if the torture's bad enough."

CIA sources speaking on condition of anonymity described six techniques: "Attention Grab, Attention Slap, Belly Slap, Long Time Standing, Cold Cell, Water Boarding."

The six "Enhanced Interrogation Techniques," as sources called them, were used on a dozen top Al-Qaeda targets incarcerated in isolation at secret locations on military bases in regions from Asia to Eastern Europe, ABC said.

" 1. The Attention Grab: The interrogator forcefully grabs the shirt front of the prisoner and shakes him.

2. Attention Slap: An open-handed slap aimed at causing pain and triggering fear.

3. The Belly Slap: A hard open-handed slap to the stomach. The aim is to cause pain, but not internal injury. Doctors consulted advised against using a punch, which could cause lasting internal damage.

4. Long Time Standing: This technique is described as among the most effective. Prisoners are forced to stand, handcuffed and with their feet shackled to an eye bolt in the floor for more than 40 hours. Exhaustion and sleep deprivation are effective in yielding confessions.

5. The Cold Cell: The prisoner is left to stand naked in a cell kept ear 50 degrees. Throughout the time in the cell the prisoner is doused with cold water.

6. Water Boarding: The prisoner is bound to an inclined board, feet raised and head slightly below the feet. Cellophane is wrapped over the prisoner's face and water is poured over him. Unavoidably, the gag reflex kicks in and a terrifying fear of drowning leads to almost instant pleas to bring the treatment to a halt."

Water Boarding brings results within seconds, the sources said. A prisoner is tied onto a board with his feet higher than his head, and his face is wrapped in cellophane. When water is poured over him, he begins to gag and begs to confess, sources told ABC.

"The person believes they are being killed, and as such, it really amounts to a mock execution, which is illegal under international law," John Sifton of Human Rights Watch told ABC.

After investigating the claims, the network asked CIA officials for comment, but they "would neither confirm nor deny the accounts. They simply declined to comment," ABC said.

Earlier this month, CIA inspector general John Helgerson said techniques used by the agency appeared to violate the international Convention Against Torture, according to current and former officials who described the report to The New York Times.

The report listed 10 techniques authorized in early 2002 that went beyond those used by the US military on prisoners of war.

Wow......if thats as far as the intelligence community is "allowed" to go....that's really sad.

I have seriously had worst things done to me by my sister when i was younger.

1. The Attention Grab: Shaken by the front of my shirt by my sister and then had my head smacked into the wall a few times....not too bad.

2. Attention Slap: That was a daily thing...out of no where..*SMACK!*

3. The Belly Slap: Try 10 candy bars....she would hold my down and slap me on the belly with a metal spatula until I could name 10 candy bars....and if you repeated one you had to start over and couldn't use any of the previous ones.

4. Long Time Standing: While being locked in a cabinet for more than 48+ hours while to small to move in isn't exactly the same...it was an effective means of me not being a Holy Terror while being babysat....And I have done longer for jobs.

5. The Cold Cell: A cake walk compared to being grabbed by your sister and your uncle out of the shower and tossed outside in a Minnesota Blizzard for nearly a half hour...at 6 years old!!! LOL.

6. Water Boarding: I could always count on my sister and her friends to hold me by my ankles from the diving board in the water for a few minutes....the first few times you panic...then you start to get your bearings and find that "zen" place LOL.

I know many people with older brothers that did SOOOO much worse.....and this is the legal extent of what the CIA is allowed to do. Sad....very sad. I long for the days of a nail through the scrotum into a wood chair......or ball peen hammers on toes. Where has our pride in torture gone :(

Now this is Torture.

Most of those who've been detained and questioned at Guantanamo Bay tell a similar story: uncooperative prisoners are stripped to their underwear and shackled hand and foot. Some are forced to crouch in uncomfortable positions and some endure strobe lights,
loud rap music and extremes of heat and cold.

torture is one of those pita things...
what you get out of it is a very 50/50 deal
and at what point do you consider it "the training" or "they really don't know jack"

BUT on the other hand.. most of our torturees are from areas where crime = loss of limb, or death.. they really don't understand any different.. going to jail is sort of like telling a 6 year old not to run with that 12 gauge he is carrying with the safty off.. but not taking the shotgun away, or at least turning on the safty. it just doesn't click.
