China Wants Only 'Healthy' News on Web By AUDRA ANG, Associated Press Writer
Sun Sep 25, 5:36 PM ET
BEIJING - China said Sunday it is imposing new regulations to control content on its news Web sites and will allow the posting of only "healthy and civilized" news.
The move is part of China's ongoing efforts to police the country's 100-million Internet population. Only the United States, with 135 million users, has more.
The new rules take effect immediately and will "standardize the management of news and information" in the country, the official Xinhua News Agency said Sunday.
Sites should only post news on current events and politics, according to the new regulations issued by the Ministry of Information Industry and China's cabinet, the State Council. The subjects that would be acceptable under those categories was not clear.
Only "healthy and civilized news and information that is beneficial to the improvement of the quality of the nation, beneficial to its economic development and conducive to social progress" will be allowed, Xinhua said.
"The sites are prohibited from spreading news and information that goes against state security and public interest," it added.
While the communist government encourages Internet use for education and business, it also blocks material it deems subversive or pornographic. Online dissidents who post items critical of the government, or those expressing opinions in chatrooms, are regularly arrested and charged under vaguely worded state security laws.
Earlier this month, a French media watchdog group said e-mail account information provided by Internet powerhouse Yahoo Inc. (Nasdaq:YHOO - news) helped lead to the conviction and 10-year prison sentence of a Chinese journalist who had written about media restrictions in an e-mail.
As part of the wider effort to curb potential dissent, the government has also closed thousands of cybercafes — the main entry to the Web for many Chinese unable to afford a computer at home.
Authorities in Shanghai have installed surveillance cameras and begun requiring visitors to Internet cafes to register with their official identity cards.
The government also recently threatened to shut down unregistered Web sites and blogs, the online diaries in which users post their thoughts for others to read.

Oh communism would work if it was instilled in a country of, you know, 30 citizens with enough resources to feed a few hundred. Until one of them figured out some way to profit off his fellow citizens and decided to take power for himself. Anyway, point I was going to make is "communism" isn't really the word I'd use to describe above situation. I'd probably use a term like "Totalitarian Police State," which I guess has become synonymous with communism in today's modern world. Anyway, here's a shout to all you Chinese out there getting fucked by your government, hoping to see a revolt any day now.

Until they roll up the tanks. Because unfortunately unlike the rest of the world, the Chinese understand how effective tanks are at "squashing" a protest.

Er... what? That was my response on the chance that you were entirely serious in your post, because there are plenty of people out there who think exactly that. Kill the protesters and nuke the towelheads am i rite? Are you one of them? This is not a joke question. These same people are generally the type to call me unamerican for not supporting a war, and I like to point out hypocrisy. If you posted that as a joke, fine, but I've seen far more reactionary things posted around here.

No I'm not. You are really bad at sarcasm I can see and spelling (it's right).
Was the "Unfortunately" part of my post too confusing for your head to wrap around? Or is it because you think its spelled unfotoonitlay?

I'm sorry for using "am i rite?" (http://forums.somethingawful.com/dictionary.php?act=3&topicid=71) , it's a cliche from SA used when pretending to be retarded, and was unaware that it hasn't picked up elsewhere. Please try to make an attempt to address my point, and not nitpick my writing style. I'm not psycho.
So you believe that protests should be stopped by force? I agree that for the most part they're useless and stupid, but there's something seriously wrong about taking away people's right to do it. It does fall under free speech (until it moves from protesting into something that causes problems, like riots). If you were seriously pissed off or something, would you want to be run over by a tank for trying to complain about it? I would hope that one of the things that we can all appreciate about this country is that we're free to say whatever we want, no matter what anyone thinks. Sure, it means that we have to listen to douchebags once in a while, but I'd take it over a dictatorship any day.

Paging a mod to this thread to move it to the Political Playpen.
Is anyone really surprised that China would make such a move? The internet is prolly their greatest fear as it is the hardest to control. They don't care about the presence of rampant piracy or anything like that but if someone posts up a pic of Chinese police kicking a villager, they go all to pieces.

They just want to make sure they still run the country and not anyone else.

I really don't care what the protest is about or even if they are right or wrong. There is just something totally humorous to me to see people :poke: and :poke: at any sort of large bear to the point it breaks out of it's cage of control and beats the living shit out of them..
with that in mind, NO ONE beats down and full on ENDS a protest like china!!!!
That was sort of bunnyslayers point, ya just don't know him as well as I do.. hehe

Russia was pretty scandalous in the way they did it back in the day. All those people agitating to secede in Chernobyl? "Woops, we shouldn't have pressed that meltdown button, comrade."

It is pretty funny in the hypothetical sense, just like putting a baby into the blender. I just think he might be somewhat serious about it, which is why I asked. I know people who have been beaten (unprovoked) with riot gear at a non-violent protest, which I can even share video of, and it sickens me when to watch.

You are an idiot who doesn't read. And correcting your spelling errors is an attempt to try and help you. Quickest way to look stupid is to spell something wrong. Where did I say I think protesters should be beaten? If your kind would stop trying to put words in peoples mouths and read and think for yourselves for once we wouldn't have these problems.
