I have never found a good explanation on what patch panels are used for, or that I could completely understand. So if someone could explain how they work and what they can be used for in laymans terms, I'd appreciate it :)

The ones I have seen are usually breaking apart the wires in a building and running them to cat5 jacks on the panel.

hey bro the awnser is in the name Patch. it is a relay to be exact used when you run wires in buldings so you can change floor plans without having to re run wires to your hubs, switches ,routers ect. In lay-mans terms i would call it a junction box.

Like you have cat5 coming out of a wall, you thread it into the patch panel so you have some nice rj45 jacks, then run some more cat5 from that to a switch or something.

The best analogy for a patch panel is it's like a electrical power strip but for computer cable. A patch panel can hold all kinds of different medium all depending on what you want to plug into it. It could be coax, CAT5, Fiber...it's all so you can organize a lot of cable coming into a single point.

When it's done well a patch panel is great...when it's done poorly it's like a big tangel of spaghetti.
