It's like a truck just back into my cpu room here and dumped two tons of deja vu all over me.. :ROFL: blahahaha.. Oh man, that's some good old school over hype going on. Someone has been digging in the lantro play book of :secret:

Don't get me wrong, I hope the Cal-Lan is a HUGE success but at least in this case for me and most of the old school FLG members as far as the big $$$$ hunt LAN go: Been there, done that, done it bigger, with even more BS, more sponsors (yeah we even had nvidia) talk and $$$ flow, more CPL tour BS, more promise this and that and everything else as far as California LANs goes, with trade show ties in and software programs and going to E3 handing out biz card and we then............ failed..

Oh not just failed but full on super nova level of black hole imploded failed in one of the best month long internal melt downs I have ever been witness to first hand.. :ROFL: I'd say more but well ya know, the NDA and so on protects those sekrats!!

My main tips to Cal-Lan as a guy who was there as we (most of the old school FLG guys) ground from nothing to close to 200+ size LANs is to take all the over hype talk down about 75%.. Better to hype a 5 and deliver an 8 then talk what will be a sure fire 10 and deliver a 4. $50 to get in? Not an issue for adults but errrr the average market segment for open LANs is kids (under 21) and $50 might as well be the left arm

Placer Fairgrounds? Great building looks wise sep it's can't power more then 125, max.. Did 160 there but it was a nightmare of power dumps and we stole power from next door, the bathroom (I drove to get the lightbulb socket converter thing), the kitchen fridge etc etc.. Still had power outs once every hour, at least..

HEY but hope it works out for them.. I'd like to see some huge LAN's back in Sacramento. Oh and LOVE that at least there is some far off run up time.. With 2 month lead ya should be able to get at least 100+ reg'd and maybe 15 prepays?

That's always a nice nut check feeling. Week before the lan going "Geee hope we don't get blood bathed on cost here"

I have to echo your thoughts here Lamb - I mean, until you coordinate, setup, hype, and run a BIIIIG event, you have idea ZERO what you're in for.

Town sort of needs that, after all, not like anyone can get into a FLG event so as far as being competition to other LAN parties, we are sooooo totally not. Hell might as well have a sign on the door of FLG that goes "NO you" and a picture of a cross over cable..

being that is the dream of FLG.. 180 degrees from all other LAN parties! Get bigger? Hell no, we want to get smaller and smaller til just two of us are left. hmm, theres a few things that have just got me stumpled.

1) thier banner states "world famous"....ive never heard of them. Noone i know seems to know them. Perhaps false advertising...id get my lawyer on that right away, but i really dont think they have any capital at this point (and if they do, it will surely be gone on the event they are planning).

2) The guy's handle who's posting news to thier site is named "Gasius Maximus". Im thinking that "smoke and mirrors" might be a more suitable name.

3) This guy has alienware and nVidia logo's all over his site. Now, if theres one thing i know, its that when it comes to logo's, these companies have strict guidelines on how they are displayed and used. nVidia and Alienware would definitly be flingin some shit like wild monkeys if they knew this guy had slaughtered thier logo's like he has. So im going to assume that this guy has no connections to nVidia or Alienware.

Final Assestment: This guy is out to get peoples cash and underdeliver. Ive seen this before up here in washington state. People come along stating a huge event, get a bunch of cash upfront, and the day of the event, people show up to an empty room.

Hey Gang, Many LANs in California take place but the outcry is for a High Class Event. I’m not knocking the smaller events or less structured, but the people are looking for a place that has the latest, best, most technologically advanced LANs and are willing to pay 40, 50 and even 60 bucks a head for the whole weekend, and why wouldn't they?

A high class event is the outcry? That's news to me.
Most Technologically advanced Lans? Then why are they asking you to bring cables and cards for 10/100.

Wanna Run your own game server? It'll cost you 10 bucks.


Spectators are only allowed in the "spectator viewing area" unless it's media coverage. CAL-LAN is not a "typical' LAN or social gathering, it is more like a MLB / NBA / NHL / NFL / Concert where a PAID admission is required to get in. This is done with the safety of the attendees in mind. At anytime a parent, or family guardian wishes to communicate with their child, the child must come out of the room into the lobby. If your child needs paged, we can do that, but your child may come out very red, and upset. Make sure you have a communication method set up BEFORE the lan with your parent/child/family/friends. Pretend you ARE at a concert or sports event, how would friends/family get a hold of you there? Likely, that answer will help you devise a plan to meet at CAL-LAN.

Of course I think the FAQ stuff they have listed on the site right now is for an older LAN that was set in the Hotel conference room of a Holiday inn years ago.. So a lot of the "no chair" and so on rules had more to due with that then anything else. Only lunch bag size coolers, no cpus on the floor and so on.. that's mostly due to it being Holiday inn I'm sure..

for me the best part of the whole main page over there is:

Look, I simply came to promote to who I thought may want to hear of our event. no wars, no hard feelings.
Not sure what building you specifically looked at but the "Johnson building is 6000 + sf and has fourteen 30 amp 220v besides the dedicated 110v plugs.
but, after meeting with Phil from NVIDIA this last weekend at PDX LAN (where Matt has no problem filling 50 dollar seats) Phil informed me he hasn't seen high end LANs for some time in Cali and we agreed to do some higher end events.
In regards to the manipulation of promotional material from my sponsors it depends on what level of relationship you have with them.
I have a legal relation with all my affiliates where agreement of use, likeness and promotional material may be used in such ways.

As for references, simply put, if you guys care to participate it is worth the while with serious gamers.

Not sure why things went on a hard line here but no hard feelings on this end.

Well, you still haven't told us who you are... Those of us who might know who's "back" are curious. That fact alone would lead one to believe that you're one of the two ppl who we think you are, and if you are one of those expect no love here...

As for the placer fairgrounds you need to make sure that the power you think is there, is there. If you "heard" those numbers from someone @ the fairgrounds (their "electrician" for example) then I would seriously check it out for yourself first. I think we used to do LANs in Jones hall, but they told us similar tales the first time we rented it, and I can tell you they were exagerated to say the least... I really hope you're not ULF_Dan again, because I'd hate to give this advice twice only to have it ignored again. Anyway, if you're not who we think you might be, then don't get too discouraged by all the ranting in here. We just like giving the new guy a hard time, and you just chose this as your first post...

I am sorry but I disagree with you a LOT and what you promise for this event. Your site has next to nothing regarding accurate information. You say this is event Roman Numeral 7 which implies you have had 6 events prior to this one. Yet you give ZERO proof of anything. You say there is legal relations with affiliates and you can use their logos in 'such ways." No way...company's protect their logos and dictate terms when they are the ones footing the bill.

If you want respect for the event you are trying to promote then you had better do your homework. This group KNOWS all the points to throwing a large event and IMO your stuff stinks right now.

yeah sep PDX is not held in Sacramento..

none of this is ment as any sort of personal attacks, at least not as far as the stuff posted by those of us who are giving suggestions and ideas.. As for bad feelings, we have callous skin due to repeated tinfoil wearing, we tend to be more blunt about some issues then others would be.. Heck maybe even mean.. :heart:

We know first hand that: Placer lies about power, people in sacramento flake on LAN events, LANs of 100+ in sacramento, in teh past, get LOT of to sign up but few prepay (setting off a chain effect of feeling you don't need too being it's not going to sell out).. Rolling in a hardcore helper monkey group of 50+ a 200 man lan was still huge effort to sell, promote and so on and that was with a CPL tour and a being much better known around town then you are now..

Again, not looking to sound harsh, I hope you can pull this off but as it stands right now it looks like you have the desire, a web site and a little $$$. No core group, no helper monkeys, no active web site and so on.. That not enough IMO to go from zero (where you are now) to what is being pimped as a whoop ass huge lan.. Sep you DO also have a 2 month lead time..

I reall do hope you can pull it off.. I know other areas of the USA make it seem like all one needs to get people in the seats is some prizes and a flyer and boom, sold out..

Heck that :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: :rolleyes: "Million Man LAN" that got slashdot and so on press SOLD out the other states LAN in a few weeks and the california one, errrrrrr 40 sign ups and 10 prepays, maybe? That was mostly helper monkeys too so we did not need any promo effort.. Just a tougher sell out here..

I truly wish you luck.. I know we will be watching and of course doing are normal bashing. hehe I'm sure this post ya made and being a good sport about us :poke: at ya will net ya some people...

My Conversation with Phil from NVIDIA was based around the fact of us doing something to make it better,... Comes down to "Hey, let's go do their event and show them skill" or "we suck and would rather sit and look at other Guys all night"

As you can see, this group ain't your average "let's set up a website and talk about having a LAN" set of people. First off, why is it soo hard to come forth and tell us who you are? I've personally asked three times now. Who are you and how would we "know" you, as you site says?

2nd, no people don't show to a LAN for the prizes. We haven't given away a prize yet, and we still have to turn ppl away.

Third, Bullfrog is absolutely right. There is no agreement in hell nvidia is going to make with you so that you can edit their corporate logo's. Why would they want you screwing with someting they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars perfecting?

Trying to "buy" attendance with swag has very rarely boosted attendance. It's a nice thing to have but it sure doesn't make an event fun. Most of this group has found that swag draws attention away from actually having a FUN event. There is a customer relationship saying that goes "your customers perception is your reality." One of the key ways to prove that your gamers perception is aligned with your reality is demonstrating what is going to happen. You corrected that this is event "8" but again without information regarding the other 7. I follow the Ronald Regan school of trust...."trust but verify".

If you want to convince people to attend your event then I strongly suggest you work on your presentation. With this group you "flunked lunch" with your first post. To say that I am skeptical of your ability to pull this off is an understatement. To say you don't have anything to prove I think is a mistake. You have EVERYTHING to prove IMO until something actually happens. I wish you luck and hope it works out for you.

Hey Gas-Max, you're all right. This group can be brutal and they have fun doing it, and you've taken it well.
I do hope your LAN is a success, as I think it's something that Sacramento needs. However, for me, it's
just not something I'm interested in.

I'm not normally an MP game player. I come to FLG LAN's for the socializing as much as anything, and
LAN's are the only place I play MP games. I also drink a beer or two, listen to Mykul scream like a little
girl and cuss out loud every time Girl Monster kills him in a game, and it's a free flow event - if I want to
host a game of Kill The King I just do it and wait for people to join. I don't have to ask permission or
configure my PC so it conforms to certain standards. There are very few rules at FLG LAN's, and that's
why I keep coming to them. It's not for prizes or competition, it's for the socializing and the fun.

I understand your need for rules and order, and would likely do the same if I were holding a Pay to
Play event. It's just not the kind of event that draws my interest. What you see in these forums is how
we behave at LAN's. That's what makes them fun, and that fun couldn't exist at your event. Still, I hope
it's a huge success. Good luck!

I think not

that in and of it's self is going to make it pretty damned hard to get going.. since you're going to basicly be trying to get individuals to come.. since the groups won't do it for a while. and individuals are MUCH harder to reach and to get enough of
