apparently you have until july if you want one that can be "tampered with" or actually used to get hdtv for free

Yeah, that's been comming for a while. Everyone knew it was comming, despite the valiant efforts of the EFF  Personally, I think if you want to do "perfectly legal" things with your digital media, someone will come up with a hack to bypass this--no matter what the legal consequences... But just the same, I might pick up a DTV card before july. Though, I'd bet money that they will change the signal somehow so that the older equipmetn won't be able to pick up anything in a year or two...

not sure there is a "best card".. Only have like 3 main ones to pic from.
ATI HDwonder card that everyone seems to hate..
the fusion card some people bitch about but I've have never had an issue with.. I own two now being I just picked up a 2nd one last week. Plus they are cheap at $149..
http://www.dvico.com/
last you have the MyHD card that has some never version on they way called the 130 I think, 120 is the model now. Hardware based and I would guess it's the "big gun" but it also cost more, needs a pass thru cable and you need a daughter card for more $$ if you want dvi from it and I did not want to bother with that.. Plus I think it's like $250 with out the daughter card.
some at the http://www.avsforum.com/ HTPC run one of each in a box.. Sep for me, the cost for the MyHD held me back being again, the fusion works fine for me.
main places to buy from:
http://www.digitalconnection.com/
and or
http://www.copperbox.com/
I ended up buying from copperbox being they had the card in stock..

yeah the fusion Q err well think it's now "T" and the new myHD130 on the way are QAM tuners so can tune non encrypted cable signals.. The thing is, anything you get now, could be "gone" later anyways being I think we know how cable like to lock stuff out.. That why they rent boxes ya know..
so it's not like you all of a sudden have a cable box on your pc.. Most of the new ones tune both OTA and QAM so you will end up being able to test both setting out anyways..
keep in mind that it's not like all of sudden everything is HD now.. Heck most of the "new" HD stuff is sports or network prime time anyways.. So for me at least, if I can record two HD shows that happen to be on at the same time, I'll be happy.
Qwertys
02-08-2005, 06:25 PM
but if you hook up the hdtv tuner to a cable box there will be no problem and still record in hdtv right? the only problem is changing channels, which i know there is hardware and software to do that anyways.
DeadLamb
02-08-2005, 06:55 PM
nah you don't use the cable box at all..... just run a cable to the tvcard and tell it to "search for channels.." it will lock on to anything it can can tune.. If it can't tune it, you don't get it...
So your normal analog stuff of 1-72 etc are no big deal.. Then it lock in on some of the digital station but only the ones not blocked.. so right now that is like NBC, ABC, ESPNHD, INHD1,2 and a so on.. maybe one or two **naughty** stuff like a movie station that should be blocked and I'm sure soon they will be.
it's NOT everything HD, it's not even all the main networks digital feeds you CAN get OTA nor is it the "digital" cable stations like MTV2, History channel etc and all that stuff..
Where as OTA (over the air) you get all digital all the time for all the networks and HD for all prime time shows that are in HD..
for me, being I wanted a vcr replacement it works out great.. I have one card to record whatever and nothing cpu to record other stuff.. win win for me, I'd also just be happy with two OTA cards to be honest.. Spe again, they are all
only issue I ran into was that fusion did not like my matrox card in my 2.2 box.. So I'll need to pick up a cheap POS 9200 or something like that to make it work.. The G400 I have is just too old..

nah DL i mean even if the card couldnt support tuning a channel like the new digital cable, dont those boxes convert down to a normal signal that the card could read? aren't there standalone HDTV tuners?
I mean, theres gotta be some way around this fcc thing.. WHY? HDTV Camcorders thats why. ya know those 10k$ ones. or what about playing your own HDTV media. you gotta be able to record that on your PC.
really , someone will figure a way around it. it'll probably be as simple as soldering a potato chip to your card.

So why not just hook up cable to a tv? Am i missing the point?

well that is not going to help you get HDtv if your HDtv screen has a OTA tuner built in.. If you don't have a tuner you can't get anything.. UNLESS you have a cable box that tunes for you or something else.. Like a HDtv card in a cpu or a cable card in the tv.
All of that does not let you record anything HD. I want to record a show in HD and watch it in HD later.. The QAM HDtv card I just got lets one do that with cable or an attenna depending on what you hook it into..
+ side is no more worry of reception and more options for HD only stations like ESPNhd etc..
- side is in QAM mode I can't seem to tune all the local networks as I could in OTA mode. Get ABC, FOX, NBC and that's it.. trade off..
the fear with the flags is that they will be IN the stream and not all that easy to crack being the code will also be built into the hardware.. How do you "crack" a stream when the card is told not to save it in the first place? As for swapping to a new signal mode, they have millions into the format now, it will not change for a while IMO..

Okay, so Buying an 'old' card or a crackable card will still work when they code the new hardware? I'm sure people will find ways around it, but it would obviously better to get a crackable card before the new ones come out?

the idea is that the cards now will just ignore the flags added to the stream.. Stuff made after 7/05 will not.. I'm guessing soon we will see a bigger rush on the cards come summer...
The big fear is that the flags will be abused.. like saying you can't record the Super Bowl or a game 7 of the NBA play off's.. No HDtv recording of "24" being they want to bring it out on DVD..
That might not even happen. Flags might only be used on PPV stuff and you can't tune that anyways being it's encrypted. Just have to wait and see..

Sorry for bringing up an old thread, but....
I'm gonna move on this.
Lamby: Which one of these do you have? Looks like there new fusion cards avalible:
http://www.fusionhdtv.co.kr/Eng/products/
Should I go with the one you have? Or should I go with the newer one? I don't really see the difference other than yours is an 8bit and the new one is an 10bit
Also, do these integrate with Titan TV? Thanks
P.S., Can I " Split " a External Antenna feed?

yeah I have two now. The Fusion II that fishmonger sold me and I bought a newer Fusion III as a self birthday gift. The market has made your choice for ya being you can't buy the older versions anymore, just have the III QAM for sale now.
http://www.digitalconnection.com/
or
http://www.copperbox.com
I bought from copperbox being DC always seem to be out of stock.
The III tunes OTA better then the II anyways and as far as splitting the signal I'm doing it for a little home inside attenna and no issues.. What was coming in at say 80% on the II is at 100% with the III.. Cool little cards are pretty cheap at $149 Vs say the Myhd at $250.. I really like it..
The QAM is a total crap shoot.. I got INhd and a few other "naughty" stations but comcast has now encrypted those.. Still get the local stuff, well most of the local HD with QAM but still no cbs, UPN or WB. So I end up just running it OTA and that's fine..
I just want to be able to record shows and watch them later.. I'm not even bothering to back stuff up to DVD-r or anything.. It's more like my own little ghetto HD tivo. :)

DL or Area -
It's been a few months since this topic was last discussed. I was curious if you've kept a pulse on these cards. I did a quick search on copperbox and found these (2) cards:
http://www.copperbox.com/lite/popinfo.php?lc_code=FUSION-HDTV5-GOLD
http://www.copperbox.com/lite/popinfo.php?lc_code=FUSION-HDTV5-LITE
Are these cards basically just further advancements in the HDTV card or should I be looking for some specific feature or ??

I'm bringing this thread back to get a little advice.
I see all this info and I'm really drooling over all the HD capable cards, but honestly, I'm not going to need it for my specific purpose.
What I want to do is record some of my son's favorite shows which haven't come to DVD and aren't available any other way except for me to take matters in to my own hands and record/burn it myself.
I'm seriously jonesing for one of those DViCO FusionHDTV 3 Gold-T cards, but I really don't need to spend $150 on something that a $25 card will do.
In the end, all I want to do is record some shows off of Nick Jr and burn them onto DVD. HD is not a necessity in the least. Being cheap would be vital as well.
Do you guys think I'd do well with something like this and downloading some software?

They made the coolest thing awhile back..........Called a VCR.
Your doing kids shows.......I doubt they are real keepers. So why not just roll old school....hell you could buy a new vcr and tons of tapes......while not as tech and cool.........it offers more advantages then doing it to DVD

As much as that's cool, I don't know where my VCR is and my inlaws got rid of theirs. I have a DVD writer, plus everything else in place to record the shows, save the tv tuner. I think I'll run to fry's just to pick something up and see where that gets me.

Strike TWO!
The eBay page or feature you are attempting to access is not responding.
Please try the options below:
Try to access the feature directly from the eBay Home Page, instead of using a bookmark.
Wait a few minutes and try to access the feature again.
If you have waited ten to fifteen minutes and you still can't access your page.

Dude, I got the DViCO FusionHDTV 3 Gold-T. Great card, just downloaded the newer software.
You'll need a TPR to DVD program and I use one at home that ROCK!!!!
ie: recorded Smallville last night, 10 gigs per 60 minutes. That's all raw 1080i PURE DIG HDTV
I use that converter and it compresses to a DVD-r, Converts to MPG and then converts to VOBS which then get burned to DVD.
Quite possibly the perfect ap if you don't need menus and shit. I am very happy and this set up rocks,
I think there are some that have both OTA and Satellite input but this OTA HDTV will pick rwegular antenna but not both Satellite/Cable and OTA
Overall, GREAT card for the money RESOURCE HOG though

That's the card I was eyeing, but when I saw the price tag online, I figured I didn't HD. Good to know though, just in case I upgrade.
Good looking out.

Back from the dead again is this thread!
We decided to dump Dish as I'm very tired of their continued efforts to ignore their existing subscriber base and keep giving the new hardware to the new subscribers. Now that any new HD content will be MPEG 4 only with E* (Echostar - what Dish Network used to be), the 811, 921, and 942 receivers are obsolete. Sure, you can still use the legacy receivers for the existing MP2 channels, but with 4 new Voom channels and ESPN2HD in MP4 only and the new 611 being available to new customers 1st, I bailed out.
I was looking at picking up a Samsung HD Tuner for my OTA HD but remembered that several of y'all are running HD PCs. What are the specs you're using on your Home Theater PC? What OS?
Thanks!

Very good question. I'm putting together a PC right now, and I know Gremlin and Mod are too, so this would be good info. So who's got HD on their PC? What was the deal with the new cards? They just have support for somethign like the do-not-copy bit, right? Does that mean you can't record to the HD??? Wouldn't that defeat the purpose of these cards?

Originally, an FCC ruling [PDF 448k] made it illegal as of July 2005 to manufacture or import DTV tuners unless they included DRM technologies mandated by the FCC
apparently the appeal went well
it's been overturned, though there is a link in there for discussions on hdtv cards somewhere
