This game is supposed to be the follow up to an old Microprose game X-COM: UFO Defense. The game that is considered to be #1, yes #1 real time strategy game ever created to this day (there was a poll on the internet 1-2 years ago or something.)
The minute I've installed and started the game, I clicked Play, and it was all back, the geoscape of the planet Earth was in front of me.
"Oh hell yeah," I said right before fishmonger walked by and commented something about world domination from the looks of my screen.
Ten minutes or so into the game there was somewhat a confusion, I couldn't find an option to get into my base and start building "structures" in the base to make it more military, manufacturing or research like. Instead, they've removed this feature and gave the player 3 types of bases: military, manufacture, and research. On one side this is better and easier since you can just choose the type of base you want, so you can worry more about shooting down UFOs, kill aliens, capture them and their technologies, research, and make your own technologies along the way while leveling your squad and exploring areas.
Just as I mentioned above, this game is more about tactical view than the geoscape screen, you spend more time going on missions, what pretty much "old XCOM" was all about.
They simplified controls and different steps, making the game easier to pick up. Of course, anybody who has played UFO Defense can jump right into this; however, others might want to consider going through Tutorial first and see what it's all about.
The tactical view is decent, maybe it could have been better, but it is enough for the game as it is, mapping is very good. Especially mapping with the feature that it affects the geographical environment of the mission you are on. I was amazed to see that when I went to Moscow, buildings and vehicles are Russian, if you go to a Mexico mission, it's Mexican environment with their houses, trees, and if you go to a mission in Asia, well guess :p
Ultimately, this game all about hours and hours of single player-non-stop-action-fun.
Message from the game: ""Look at me, I am a scummy little Reticulan with Alien Rockets, and I will spoil your fun by blasting the crap out of you..."
Personally, I am probably not even half way through the game even though I have researched so much, it takes time, plus to capture every base, and finally - find out why and how aliens attacked the planet, and stand up against those little dirty shits Reticulans
For any X-COM: UFO Defense fan UFO: Aftermathbrings back old memories, improvements, new features, 3D graphics environment, and much more. I definitely recommend this.
