It looks like I'm gonna get a new hard drive, And I'm wondering what version of windows to put on it. I see Windows Server 2003 around the LANs a lot, and Windows 2000 and such. I am currently running XP Pro. Computer is an athlon XP 1800+ w/512 mb ddr, and I'll be getting a 160 gigabyte drive. Motherboard is an Abit NF7 (nforce2 chipset), and I've got a Geforce 3 video card (thanks Gremlin).
So what is everyone's favorite? What problems have you had?

oh man I wish you wouldn't have asked!
My FAVORITE version of Windows is 3.11 (WFW). I installed it on a 2.4 ghz system - went from powered off to full on ready to use @ the desktop in 12 seconds. :D
Realistically tho, if I was to install an OS on a new machine for a normal user, it'd be XP. IF you are a power user, then you might wanna give Server2k3 a shot.
I think the Server 2K3 thing morphed into a desktop OS is just a fad BS thing. As much as I fuck with computers at work, doing WAY more than regular web surfing and e-mail, I can't reliably use 2K3 for very much. There's just weird things that it DOESN'T do that I want it to do withough breaking out the fuckin SDK for Server OS to find out how to properly enable ActiveX and some random Java Plug-in to get my DiabloII editor to work. Samething for installing some of the development software for like DVD Express... uh NO! Sorry, you don't have some BS file that's needed to run. Try the same install on XP, no problems.
Lame... XP for Newbies and general use, 98SE for Grandma.

Why would you make grandma use Win98? So she could look at crashes and call you over for periodic reinstalls and mysterious voodoo fixes?
No thanks, I'd throw Winxp at her.

You're on! Used to play it nonstop back in the day. A friend and I played direct modem games... those were the days. :)
Dukematch, next Lan we're both at. Prepare for death!

Descent was cool, but bring on Duke.
Hey maybe we can play Duke Nukem Forever!
Oh wait. Never mind.:D
Getting this car back on the road...
I like XP Pro a bunch, but I also like 2000. Either one works for me, I can use them both just fine.
I want to try out Server 2k3.

duke sort of sucks now being there is no mouse aim and everyone is so used to that now..
as for an OS.. I can't see a reason not to just run good old XP, at least on a system that is an over all gen use cpu.. For games and so on.. Only down side I can see is that they should just have made one version of Xp, that being Pro....

Duke3D has mouse aim, but it only runs "inverted mouse" which explains why I play EVERY FPS game "inverted" - I learned FPS on Duke 3d. I think 'mouse aim' is a bit misleading tho, cuz if you are shooting in the general direction of your opponent, the bullets/rockets/pipe bombs are 'drawn' towards them. Kinda weak but I wasted TOO MANY hours playin that damn game.

You can get mouselook working in duke. I forget how... I have a batch file somewhere that initiates it.
And yeah... XP it will be, for this machine.
Here's another question:
I want to set up an internet gateway machine (and have it double as a dedicated server when I need one). What sort of OS should I use there? I think XP is stable enough, just get good virus protection and such... because it wont be used much, it'd make a solid machine I'd never have to worry about, right? I wanna shove it under my desk and use my KVM with it. So what I'm asking is, is xp, 2k, or 2k3 better for such a purpose?

He didn't have to. It'd look just like pci until the os did something smarter with it.

I have been using Win2k3 as my primary OS now for about 6 months and I have yet to run into anything I can't run on it. I have also not gone the full pyscho Workstation conversion stuff that some people have done. I don't care about themes and a lot of eye candy, I just like a simple, clean looking interface. When I run XP I usually turn almost everything off because it bugs the crap out of me. If I wanted the computer to do things for me I would tell it to...not have some bug-ass Microsoft service trying to do it for me.
My only real complaint is when you change hardware with win2k3 it defaults back to lock-down settings...mostly with video. Once I figured out what to quickly change it wasn't a big deal to me. I also like running it on my Opteron configurations because of the better memory management. :D

Heresy! This is what makes Windows so powerful and easy to use!

Ah Duke Nukem such a classic, "I'm gonna rip off your head and shit down your neck!". Use to play that and Quake2 over modem. Classic games.
