View Full Version : Anyone else think california should be split in two states?

california has the least amount of government officials per population then any other state. northern cal and southern cal are already talked as if they are two different states. northern cal is heavily conservitive/republican while so-cal is heavily democratic/liberal.
california is worth 55 votes. more then any other state. a LOT more then any other state.
the only problem is, so-cal has a much larger population. theres no way norcal could outvote them. thus, california has ALWAYS voted heavily democratic/liberal. tell me, when was the last time a republican/conservative won california?

I could care less, but where would the money come from to establish and entire new state government for "them?"

I know I wouldn't want to see that burden placed on the already ailing Budget situation Cal. is in.

By the way... how did we get into that budget state? Oh yea, a DEMOCRAT was elected governor till he was recalled and a REPUBLICAN is now there to fix it.

So your answer to the question would be last 2004 when Schwarzenegger was elected on a Republican ticket.

On the one hand I'd like to see it happen because SoCal being huge has a huge sway when it comes to issues that affect NorCal (for instance, they keep trying to pipe all our water to LA). On the other hand, we wouldn't have a share on all the $$$ that comes in from SoCal (unless we made them pay for our water, hmm...)

I say we stay one big happy family state.

I would love to see a split. The way that nearly half of the population gets swallowed up in the elections reminds me of Gerrymandering. SoCal gets a lot of our resources on the cheap right now, I would love to charge them and split up the electoral votes at the same time.

Be hilarious to split.........Then Socal would have to buy water from NorCal.......We already pipe it down there......And Los Angeles sells it to Nevada and keeps the revenue from that to themselves. And then they bitch about not having enough water.

Winner. Although I wouldn't complain too much if they just got rid of the electoral college.

nah, more like reform the electoral college system. instead of winning a state. how bout a county. just because of 1% difference, then that president would get then entire state? wtf is with that? does that make any sense? the electoral college is an old outdated method of voting for president. it was meant for back when we had less then 20 states, and a much much much much smaller population.

Agreed, kill off the electoral college.

Yes, split the state. SoCal is like on big huge leech sucking the blood out of us up here. We give them our water and they don’t have to pay for it because we’re in the same state, then we have to spend local money to upgrade our water supply?

I could list a whole bunch of issues like the water issue or the fact that last time I checked, the tech boom pretty much happened in norcal even though the whole state benefited from it. How many places in the country are there where you can drive 10 or more hours in a straight line and not pass through another state?

oh please.. maybe water wise, but cal did not get to be an econ bigger then most countries on the back of northern cal alone... Ya split the state, northern cal becomes Oregon lite..

As in no one cares about us at all, in anything..

You might also note that the dem/gop split is east/west, not north/south.

i think california needs to split from the bible nations that votes for drunk crackheads for president

california is the fifth largest economy in the world and i saw we prove to washington that we are different than the rest of the holy roman american empire.

You are wrong. Coastal is liberal and interior (east of Sacramento is conservative). As usual its the religiously conservative hicks that vote Republican. A better idea would be to send all the hicks back to Oklahoma then to split the state. ;)

hmm, i never noticed it that way. perhaps its because everytime i go up north, its on the eastern side of cali, and everytime i go south, its on the western side.

And i wouldn't call it the religiously conservative hicks that vote republican. just conservative hicks.
I usually vote republican because they hold the same ideals as i do, but if you find me a conservative democrat, perhaps i'll vote for him.

[edit] i just took a look at the election maps. just about all of them including propositions.
i think it we just nuked the bay area or waited for some massive earthquake (like a 9.0 AKA wrath of god) to destroy the bay area, then california would be a HEAVY conservative state.
its that 100 or so mile radius around SF that is democratic/liberal.

one of my friends said if he won the presidency, the first think he would do is nuke SF... He's got my vote.

Well I don't know about that. I was driving back from partying down in Santa Cruz this last weekend and drove by like 10 major tech company headquarters. That's got to mean something.

While the idea of spliting California is novel it would also be a total disaster. One of the reasons California is 'special' is because it has such polar-opposites that make it up. We are greater then the sum of our parts, take that away and we would be no different then any other state in the union.

Qwertys
11-03-2004, 02:30 PM
wouldn't that be the idea? if you havn't noticed, california has the most liberal laws then any other state. strictest on gun control and weapons, highest taxes. we pay higher gas taxes then any other state. in fact, we pay more taxes overall then any other states. not to mention the many gay laws that discourages MANY businesses from coming here.
ok maybe not laws for gays, but agianst them. so many stupid laws, taxes, ect that make up this great state?
i can dig diversity, but its when one majority screws the other majority that isn't cool, and thats why i had this topic. i feel we are getting screwed and misrepresented by the coastal majority.
as GM noted, I dont surf, i'm not a movie star, i'm not rich, i dont live by the beach, and i'm not a blonde airhead. but isn't that what most people think of california?
how many stereotypes do you hear about central california or non-coastal cali?

let coastal cal stand out because i'm tired of getting fucked by them. i love the valley all the way to tahoe, but SF blows (san diago isn't so bad because of the army base and lots of hot chicks).

Um, politics? right...

But in all seriousness, where would the line be drawn between Nor Cal and So Cal?

hum... well how far down do ya need to go to think of it as southern cal?
if you look at San Luis Obispo, Kern, and San Bernardino county those three cut the state off right in a line..

as you can see here.. http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2004/pages/results/states/CA/P/00/map.html

but that is more of a clean split as far as what is thought of as north and southern cal then what most would want to do as a state split. I'm sure it would be some sort of strange diagonal line or start at the port of san fran and cut right across..

totally dumb idea but still fun to kick it around some..

For the first 18 years of my life I considered everything south of redding to be Southern California :P (hey, that's where the palm trees begin). I'd definitely say Bay Area is part of NorCal if nothing else.

Agree++;
I think it needs an overhaul. most the the laws and regulations of the US were made thinking small. they weren't writing them up thinking about 200+ million people and 50 states. some things that work for small countries just won't work for larger contries.

the same is for a lot of the founding laws and amendments.
