What exactly can you do to someone if they are harrassing you? Basically, this idiot posted in my live journal, where I log the IP addresses of all posters. So I have the IP address they posted from.
Now I'm wondering, PURELY for educational purposes, if there's anything I can find out about them by just an IP address. Or maybe used to file harrassment charges?

Probably not. You could traceroute them to get an idea of their geographic location, you could port scan and otherwise fool with their computer/network, in the unlikely case that they actually have that ip delegated to them by arin, you could whois it and maybe get back real contact info.
Threating harm? or just being rude?
One may be a crime, the other may not be.
You could always call the law (FBI, whatever) and ask them.
If this person is not spoofing their ip, can't you just block it out somehow?
^^ Just random thoughts...

I was just curious. Someone told me it was bad if someone else got your IP address. Personally, I have already dealt with the girl. But I figured I'd ask around here. :diab:

Its not bad if someone gets your ip. Its pretty unavoidable. Its like talking to someone and being afraid they might hear what your voice sounds like.
Just don't kill her, I don't wanna see it on American Justice! (great show, btw)

well the person actually did threaten her life, but it's a dial-up ip, so vaguely non static, considering the person I doubt they have any security watching their ports for when they're connected but I just figure if it happens again complain to their provider and that shold be funny enough, heh
