Half life 2 Code out on Internet (http://www.gamerswithjobs.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=News&file=article&sid=665)
"Ever have one of those weeks? This has just not been the best couple of days for me or for Valve. Yes, the source code that has been posted is the HL-2 source code.

Here is what we know:

1) Starting around 9/11 of this year, someone other than me was accessing my email account. This has been determined by looking at traffic on our email server versus my travel schedule.

2) Shortly afterwards my machine started acting weird (right-clicking on executables would crash explorer). I was unable to find a virus or trojan on my machine, I reformatted my hard drive, and reinstalled.

3) For the next week, there appears to have been suspicious activity on my webmail account.

4) Around 9/19 someone made a copy of the HL-2 source tree.

5) At some point, keystroke recorders got installed on several machines at Valve. Our speculation is that these were done via a buffer overflow in Outlook's preview pane. This recorder is apparently a customized version of RemoteAnywhere created to infect Valve (at least it hasn't been seen anywhere else, and isn't detected by normal virus scanning tools).

6) Periodically for the last year we've been the subject of a variety of denial of service attacks targetted at our webservers and at Steam. We don't know if these are related or independent.

Well, this sucks.

What I'd appreciate is the assistance of the community in tracking this down. I have a special email address for people to send information to, helpvalve@valvesoftware.com. If you have information about the denial of service attacks or the infiltration of our network, please send the details. There are some pretty obvious places to start with the posts and records in IRC, so if you can point us in the right direction, that would be great. We at Valve have always thought of ourselves as being part of a community, and I can't imagine a better group of people to help us take care of these problems than this community.

Gabe"

Does this mean the game will be released earlier? :) LOL Sorry, no offense to the developer community

It SUCKS for the online play.. one of the main reason I really like new games is at least for a while you know for sure that no aim bots and so on are out there..

Now with the source code out you very will could have a CS level of cheating... boom day one the game is out.. sigh.. LAME...

it's always fun to take advantage how "click-happy" people are. :D

the source was stolen on the 19th, so it's actually only 13 days old.

anyways, i sure hope this doen't delay the game too long. i wanna play it NOW!!

Well, blame the CS people
It's all their fault, they probably can't wait for the new CS2, so they want to race valve and come up with CS2 before HL2 comes out, no really, just think about it hehehe  HEHE
Anyhow, that sucks. I don't even see a point in stealing code from a company unless they know it's a playable alpha. Are they trying to race valve in finishing the game or something? Or just for fun.
As for Gremlin, I didn't know you worked at valve.

hmm... I downloaded the page and scanned it for viruses, but norton didn't detect anything. and of course i'm not gonna click on the link to find out. if it is really a virus or trojan let me know and I'll remove the link. it's supposed to be just really, really, really annoying, not harmful.

Might wanna get rid of the link, just due to it's nature and what it could do.

The source code being out or not being out wouldn't really affect whether or not there are cheats, it would just make them easier to make.

An aimbot doesn't even really rely on an understanding of the internals of the game.

I don't think this will hurt Valve. Id had the Q3 source leak back before the game came out, that didn't heart them much.

The source will become obsolete pretty quick, any licensors will still need to license, any cheats made with this will be broken when the underlying mechanisms change and Steam will make sure people don't use the old versions.

yeah, change a few dependancies and file names and variable names and any cheat made will be teh st00ped
