OK, my cable internet service has gone to hell and I am looking to switch providers. I was looking at speakeasy.net's offerings and they look pretty tempting, but I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this outfit. I was specifically looking at the Classic Plus 1.5/768 Package as seen here http://www.speakeasy.net/main.php?page=res_dslcompare. I used to have DSL through pacbell and they capped my DL at 384 due to my distance from the CO. I was wondering if anybody has any information about whether they offer a 30 day trial or something similar...
Let me know what you guys think.

Seren/Astound They are pretty new, and they were pretty good when they first started, but now they suck. My connection drops for about a minute every 20 minutes or so... It is also happening to LawJP's uncle, so I don't think that it's a problem with my equipment.

I'm using Comcast right now.
It's ok I suppose. The only thing I have to compare it against is dial up.

I'm using Comcast right now.
I need to have a static IP, so I think that it is DSL or bust for me.
P.S. Ask Bullfrog what he thinks of Comcast right now...

If you were capped at 384 on pacbell, you're probably going to be capped at the exact same speed with speakeasy. As of last year, all the other companies were just reselling pacbell's service. It's possible that it might have changed, but I doubt it.

Right right... well I was hoping for one of two things to happen. One being that Pacbell put in one of those remote node things. I didn't get my DSL directly from Pacbell, I got it from Sonic.net, so I am not sure that Pacbell would have moved my loop to a closer node to increase my speed since I wasn't really their customer anyways. The other being that things would be different since I believe SE goes through Covad to get everything setup, so maybe they would find a way to get better speed to my house.
Maybe I am just dreaming...

Comcast says you don't have a Static IP, but mine hasn't changed ever since @home became AT&T with the exception of when i switched nics since the IP seems to be tied to your mac.

I thought about going that route as well, but hearing about Bullfrog's recent experiences has got me a little worried about Comcast. It seems they are starting to change IPs frequently - a little too frequently - at least in The Valley.

Speakeasy is the best isp out there period. I had the gamers package 1.5/768, and it was just as advertised, actually a slight bit faster. Also, you can cancel out within the first month. They actually let you setup a wireless lan and sell it to your neighbors if ya want, or just open it up, they ont care, and you get static ip's , shell access.. Damm, whish I still had them, but too far for DSL at this place.

Eh, I'd still be sceptical. Of course, it's all because of my current ISP. They're a little company out of new england somewhere, but they just resell WorldCom lines. Mine was advertised as up to 1.5/768, but they told me what I would likely get was 768/384, BUT what I really get is 600/300! But, like you I want a static IP and better outbound bandwidth, so this is the best I can get. I used to have Pacbell and the downstream BW was 1.5Mb, so I know it's not line conditions, but the best they will give me is 128Kb up, since I'm on the edge of the service area, so I don't know if I want to switch. Although, I'm thinking of moving all of the junk I'm serving to the ISP this site is on, so I can ditch my current DSL and switch to pacbell for $30/month.

Kewl thanks for the input! I figured that someone here would have some info on SE.net. If I don't go with SE.net, I think I might just go with some kind of hosted solution for my email - OR - best yet, get my little 1U colo'd. That'd be sweet...... [/dream]

If you were limited to 384 up before because of distance from the CO, you may not be able to get the 1.5/768 from speakeasy either. Changing ISPs won't change the physical limitations of the phone lines.
Best bet, try it and see what they can actually deliver, and since speakeasy allows cancels in the first month, if not happy, cancel.
