I'm looking to buy a grill.
Ideally, a charcoal/gas combo, on it's own cart. Price cap of around $500.
Discuss.

I've gone through MANY BBQ's in my time.
My best BBQ so far has been my Split 55gal Drum BBQ that I picked up from Denio's for $25.00
But some of the best home BBQ I ever had was when a friend of mine let me barrow his BBQ/Smoker last summer.
You can pick those up for a decent price at Sam's sometimes.
If you go to BBQ Galore they have all the stuff to built your own Gas BBQ.........But Im a True BBQ'er gas has no business at one of my Q's
Unless its of the :fart: Silly variety.

I haven't seen too many BBQ's that burn gas and charcoal. Here's one that looks decent: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000083GF7/103-7585136-9511844?v=glance
I suggest keeping gas and charcoal separate - go with two BBQ's.
You can get any number of decent gas BBQ's for under $400, like this one: http://att.dealtime.com/xPO-Weber_Genesis_Silver_A
I recommend the Weber Genesis. I've had mine since 1989 and it still cooks great.
I started missing the taste of charcoal in my food and recently bought a Weber Kettle platinum (includes cart and work table) for around $149 at Target. It looks like this: http://www.bbqbarn.com/grilltype/charcoal/webplat.htm
The Weber is the greatest charcoal BBQ ever, and the Platinum version comes with charcoal separators for slow cooking.
If you're looking to slow cook with charcoal, a 55 gallon drum is also tough to beat, but requires a little welding to attach a hotbox for your coal/wood.

Perhaps I'm not the seasoned veteran that some of you are, but I've done my share of barbequeing. Are there really all that many complexities to something that exists only to combine fire and meat?

It depends on whether you just want to cook it or you want exceptionally good BBQ. If it's done right, BBQ results in very tender, flavorful meat.

I hear Irish Spring can produce the same results.
Yeah for a novice or expert.....A Weber is the way to go till you find your style.
I have massive BBQ's and need a big honking grill...so the Drum does it for me.....though we normaly run the Drum for the Beef and the Weber for the chicken.
