I’m not looking to convert or anything, I’d just like something to play around with and become familiar with. It’s nice to mess around with alternative platforms every once in a while, and I’d like to actually know what I’m doing if someone with a Mac ever asks me to do computer work for them.

I actually already have an older iMac that I’ve been messing around with, but it would be nice to have something that was a little more modular and integrated better with my existing KVM setup (you can’t even run an external monitor on the iMac, sigh).

Anyway, just looking for something basically good enough to run Panther, I’m thinking like maybe an old G3 tower or something? Not sure what I’d pay for it, and especially considering this is probably a long-shot, I figured I’d ask around before I really committed any money or anything.

Thanks.

What are the specs on the iMac? Does it run OS X and would you be willing to work out a trade? I have a Blue and White G3 that I don't have room on my KVM for anymore with the addition of my A64 system.
Let me know.

It's a red 400Mhz G3 with 192megs of ram (the 64 that came with it and a 128 I added). The hard drive is the standard 10 gigs (I think its 10, it might be 8), and the Video is a Rage Pro or something like that. It’s a slot loader.

It's not necessarily mine though. We got it for my Grandma, but then she got Alzheimer’s and no one really wanted it so it ended up with me. I’ll have to check with my parents and see if they would have a problem with that or not. The OS9 install on it is a little ghetto in that it basically freezes for about 5 minutes after you boot it up but then it’s ok. I put Panther (OSX 10.3.2) on there though, so the problem only happens if you try and boot off the OS9 system folder or you startup classic.

Assuming they say no, you wouldn’t want to just sell it would you?

gnr on the screensavers someone called with that same problem and they told him to delete the os9 folder becasuse from what i understand it isnt removed when you put in panther.

err, ok, but thats assuming I want to get rid of OS9? You still need a working OS9 system folder to run classic I believe.

Err, I am not sure I want to sell off my only Mac product. I like messing around with different platforms just like you... Why don't you see if you can work something out with the folks and we can go from there?

Ok, someone has to do it and it might as well be me.

Reading this thread has made me NASEOUS! :puke:

As I was reading your messages my PC started wailing and my screen started to melt at the edges. I need to go calm it down before it freaks out completely. I can only imagine how distraught your PC's are.

Traitors!

I figured it would only be a matter of time before this happened... No, my PCs are not distraught - they like the little Mac. The other PCs (dually 2.0 Gig Xeon rig, P4 2.8, Athlon 64 @ 1.8 gHz) all like to beat up the little Mac for fun while they fold away... LOL

To fix the os9 thing, either troubleshoot extensions or just do a clean install of os9. Os9 is not needed unless you are running os9 apps of course.

To run an external monitor (or use a kvm switch), crack the case and you will see where the video cable plugs into the monitor. Then plug it into the external monitor or the kvm.

And, the newer iMacs have an external video port on the back under the removable cover (started with some 400 MHz models I think)

Is it possible to re-install OS9 once OSX is already installed? I'm not sure I even have the install CD, I think it just came witha ghetto restore CD or something.

yup, just boot to the os9 cd (I may have one lying around if u need it) and do a clean install (will be in the options once you select to install it). Won't affect the osx install.

But of course, always back up critical data
