So VIA chipsets suck..... I'm the newest addition to the "I have a Geforce4 Ti series card, and it doesn't play well with VIA chipsets" club. I'm looking for a MB based on something a little more reliable than VIA that will support an AMD XP 2100+. I'm tired of crashes and hangups. If anyone has something they're willing to part with for not a whole lot of cash, that would rock!

Thanks!!

Must resist....from.....wanting to.....kill....VIA chipsets. I hate the damn things SOOOOO much it's not even funny. All I can say is 'Nforce2' and put your problems to rest. I have 1 VIA based board in my house in my sons computer. All he does is play Bob the Builder or Tonka games on it. The damn thing still has problems with video and other simple stuff. My next upgrade will move a Nforce board into it so I can be done with VIA forever!

While I don't have anything for sale right now, I do have a suggestion you might want to look at.

http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=AN35N% 2DUltra

It's a VERY good board and it's dirt cheap. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that can come with a Nforce2. But for the cost it has everything you will need for a cheap upgrade.

Yes..... kill VIA!!! Anyway. It looks like the board you recommended DOES have an nfoce2 chipset, am I wrong? I never really knew if Shuttle was a decent brand. I always kind of stuck with Asus. I just might have to buy that badboy and be done with this crap forever! Thanks for the suggestion Bullfrog.

By Bullfrog: Yes it is a Nforce2 board and for $63 it's kind of hard to complain about. I too am a Asus fan but when you just want a simple, sweet upgrade it's hard to pass up.

Hey, uhhh..... how is that Bob the Builder game? We have a couple of the Bob the Builder action figures at work and if the game is worth a shiite I might just have to pick that up. gay hehehehheheheh

B the B games are kind of dumb but the Tonka ones are pretty cool. I just got little man a Monster Truck game that is a blast. It creates a crush course and you get to design your own truck. It's funny watching my son laugh his head off when he crushes things in the game.

That board will also OC on the FSB like a mad-man. You should be able to get to a 200mzh FSB will little or no effort with a T-bred core cpu.

I dunno much about overclocking, i might wanna play with that with this board. I have an 1800+. Where do I start?

never tried it on an amd system, but i can give you some tips

1) keep the memory and cpu ratio to 1:1 ( amd takes big hits if its not in sync, i think)

2) set memory timings to 2.5-7-3-3 (thats slow). doing that lets you push your cpu to its highest with out the memorying shitting on you. can set them lower if your ram can handle it and when you found out stable settings for cpu

3) high fsb is good. so set the multiplier to low (is too low bad?) and push that fsb up

4) get motherboard monitor, look at your temps before overclocking, take note of them. on idle and load

5) download prime95 or something, run it for a few hours to test stability

6) increase voltage to the cpu 1 notch at a time as you increase the fsb, you might want to increase the voltage for the memory too (2.7 should be ok for memory, i think 1.7 is ok for the cpu)

8) bump the fsb up 5mhz or so. if it boots into windows run prime for 15 minutes or so. if it doesnt error out, reboot and bump it up another 5 mhz. keep doing so till you error out in prime95 or if the machien doesnt boot. set it down 10 or 15 mhz and run prime95 for a few hours, over night is good, 24 hours is best. if you bump it too far and it doesnt even get past posting, you might have to reset the cmos

9) i dont know what temps are good for your 1800+, maybe someoen on the board knows

10) you using stock heatsink + fan? if your chip doesnt ok well it could be an ass chip but it will most likely be your cooling, buy a better one

err thats all for now i think

quick thing i've noticed (granted this is a 2500 not an 1800 though I have one of those I could test as well) just keep an eye on the temps, 50 or below great start ocin 60 not bad 70 getting in trouble 80 shut it off rethink your cooling 90 your going to have a new keychain soon

just what I've noticed from reading and tinkering with mine

If you are hitting even close to 60C with a barton core 2500 then must not be using a good cooler. My XP3000 on a 200mzh FSB never even gets above 45C after serious gaming. Are you using one of our OEM coolers?

Well I bumped my 1800+ to 1.73 from its usual 1.53. I'm running Prime95 as suggested by Donnie, and the temp is at 54.5 right now. I just have stock cooling.

I couldn't lower the multiplier. How do I enable that? I bumped the fsb from 133 to 150 and the vcore from 1.7 to 1.775.

If you have a motherboard to support it I'd suggest an SLK-900u. My cpu core sits pretty at 23C even with hard gaming.

The bios should allow you to change it manually without having to mod the cpu. If you have to mod the cpu it takes about 10 minutes to open the multipliers.

What about this one? http://www.coolermaster.com/index.php?LT=english&Language_s=2&url_place=product&p_serial=HAC-V81&other_title=+HAC-V81+X-DREAM

I don't know much about cooling.

Bullfrog: I'll look it up on google. Something about a pencil, right?

That thing is a LOUD MOFO. My brother was building one of those cheap mb/cpu combos from Frys and bought that one cause "it looked cool". I helped hook it up and damn that thing was screaming. It has a special knob you can put inthe back so you can turn the fan down but even as the lowest setting, it was annoying loud

Well there's a very good reason it runs so hot.. or rather ran.. live downtown, and last time i watched it closely, about a month ago was after getting home from work

no ac in those downtown apartments
no fans on while i'm not there (in the apartment)
leave the computer on 24-7

those days when it's 100 outside.. I think pullin 60 on a cpu isn't bad.. heh

BAH! It's all about how you set the beast up and watching the little details. I can run my systems and keep the temps I mentioned even when my rooms gets close to 90. The BEST aircooling combo that I have come across with the lowest noise is.....

SLK-800 with a 80mm Tornado fan running at 7volts. I have this setup on 2 dually systems and 3 single processor setups at my house. Loudest things in my cases are the damn drives and my case temps hardly ever break 30C.

I also take the time to make sure airflow is not interrupted by wiring or fan grills. I also use rubber washers to isolate vibration from any fans and I get VERY quiet systems. Most don't believe me until I bring them over to my computer room. If you want...at FLG6 I will take a look at your box and give you a few pointers. I will also see if I can dig you up a better cooler then what you are using.

I gotta work on case neatness.

btw, I haven't rebooted since overclocking. Still running solid, albeit at 42 degrees. It got up to 54 after some gaming though. But no problems.

for me I went with aftermarket cooler... Coolermaster aero 7+ does pretty good, have 2 coolermaster 80's in front (though not much area for airflow in the front without more cutting and I'm taking a break from cutting) 1 exhaust out the back and a vantech 3 fan 520 psu also blowing out the back I actually think my biggest airflow problem right now is when I bought my mobo, there was no IO cover plate in the box, so I don't have one on there, and the the part where you screw in the cards in the back had some massive cover over the screws (I guessed to make it look pretty but it was a bitch to take off and put on so I just uplled it off and tossed it.. I guessed kinda wrong, heh)
