Well, I don't have any of those (not any spare that is). However, I have one invaluable resource that cannot be acquired through any (respectable) vendor. Pocket lint! Every LAN needs this, right? Or maybe it was rat infested packing material.....

OK...so how much? I can always use good pocket lint! :hittard:

I've got a set of network cable cripmers and several baggies of ends you can have. I'll look at my extension cord collection to see if I have spares, since I have apparently started collecting them. What is the quality of power strips you were setting as the bottom of the acceptable list?

That would be outstanding my good man...anything would help. The power strips need to be pretty good given the load they will be carrying.

The other thing we are looking for are a few long tables. If you have one we could borrow that would be outstanding!.

I was thinking the ones that don't catch on fire are pretty much acceptable :)

Anything made within the past 3-4 years should be sufficient, I think.

Thoughts?

I was thinking of cruising Fry's and seeing if they have a sale going for the power strips. Also, I may have a table to bring as well.

Don't spend any out of pocket cash on this. No biggie. If you have a couple layin around that we can use, sweet. If not, no worries, we will come up with something.

BTW, what size is the table you have?

Don't have any spares, but Costco has extension cords for a good price. 80' 12/3 for ~$17. Don't think you can beat that. I think Home Depot is good for power strips. Abut $3 a piece...

I have a set of crimpers you can borrow, and I think I stole a pair from Hoss you could use too. Fry's still has Cat5e for ~$60/box (1000'). Let me know if you have a cable makeing party or something, I'm allways up for some cable related drinking games. ("OK, slam that beer! You fucked up BOTH ends!")

I got a bunch of 'ends' from a buddy @ the first LAN. Prob is that they are for stranded cable. Not real sure HOW that is different, but apparently they are.

I'm lookin into a box of stranded cable....shouldn't be THAT much more than the solid core stuff, eh?

Mod, I have a RDO right before the "sequel without equal". Why don't you take Friday off and I'll cruise up there with a box of cable and we can whip up a bunch of cables.
You supply the chickity china, and ends and I'll bring the cable and crimpers :D

Unfortunately it doesn't look like I'll be taking ANY time off until the middle of April at the earliest. While that does kinda suck, I must say that it's nice to know I'll have a job until at least then. w00t!

By stranded, do you mean the 8 pair wires inside the cable? I am normally lazy and borrow cables from work or buy them from Frys, so I haven't made cables in a while. If that is what you mean, yes and I hated it. Then again, I wasn't drinking while I was making the cables, so that may have been part of the problem...

yeah, each of the 8 wires are 'stranded'. I can't imagine them being "EASY" to put together, but on the plus side, they would be more durable, and less likely to have problems asscociated w/ bending em back n forth....one would think, anyway.

OK...let me set things straight here on the stranded cable vs solid core. Most of the adds you see is solid core because it's a lot cheaper. Almost all of your pre-made patch cables are stranded. Here is the techincal difference between stranded and solid....

Stranded cable is for use in shorter runs between network interface cards (NICs) and wallplates, or between concentrators and patch panels, hubs, and other rackmounted equipment. Stranded-conductor cable is much more flexible than solidcore cable. However, attenuation is higher in stranded-conductor cable, so the total length of stranded cable in your system should be kept to a minimum to reduce signal degradation. Solid cable is for use in runs between two wiring closets or from the wiring closet to a wallplate. Solid-conductor cable shouldn’t be bent, flexed, or
twisted repeatedly. It’s designed for both backbone and horizontal cable runs. Its attenuation is lower than that of strandedconductor cable.

Length of the cable runs shouldn't be an issue but speed will if we run gigabit ethernet over long runs. Stranded will cause us more problems with longer runs at higher speeds but it's MUCH more flexible and take a pounding. Plus really good stranded is much more expensive. Solid core on the other hand is MUCH cheaper but is very stiff cable. If you kink it really bad it is most likely ruined. With stranded you can just about tie the stuff into a knot and it will work.

For what we want to do I think solid core is the way to go. It's performs better what we want to do and what we can afford. Plus when a cable does go bad...and they do...it's not a big deal to replace it. I don't think we should base our decision on stranded just because we have a bag of stranded ends.

Compgeeks has about the best deal that I have seen so far....

Hmm. Guess you've probably looked onto this already, but I'd think that the difference in price for stranded cable would not be as low as buying some solid-wire ends. They're only $15/100 at Fry's. As I remember, if you can find it, stranded cable is much more expensive. It might be a little more durable in the long run, but we've been using our "solid" cables for 2 or 3 years now, with no problems...

Bullfrog
02-24-2003, 10:22 AM
Silly...you are very right about stranded cable. I did a bunch of price compare and stranded was just too expensive. Plus it really didn't give us any strict advantage over solid core. Solid core is also less prone to interference over long runs at high speed.

We actually got a pretty good deal from compugeeks for a 1000' CAT5e, 100 ends, crimper and tester for about $50 shipped. It's not the greatest quality cable in the world but it will work just fine for our purpose. So far I have made about 6 30' cables. Forgot how long it takes to actually do a cable correctly. Kind of sad how lazy I have been just buying pre-made cables. I just hope my fingers 'toughen' up so I can make them faster!

-I think I have a couple of extra power strips, I will do some digging when I get home.

-I also have leftover CAT5 wire on a reel if someone wants to put ends on them :cheeze:

-How about zip ties? I got like 3 packs of them the I will never use.

Bullfrog
02-25-2003, 11:01 AM
That will work, especially the extra CAT5. I have a big-old-bag of ends that would just fine on that cable. Talk with Mikey about getting the stuff to him or worst case just bring it on the 15th.

Although I didn't know about this lan untill it was sold out  (and now have commitments to go to the inlaws this weekend  ) I have at least 25-30 power strips you could use. The only problem would be getting them to ya. If anyone is coming up to your lan from My area, they could stop by and pick them up!
