Holly crap. Dell is having a deal until the 4th for a free 8 gigabit ports. I.e. you get a 16 port switch for the price of the 8, or 24 for the price of 16... The 16 port one is ony $179 w/ free shipping!

Yeah, I'm fighting the urge, but I don't know if I can hold out until the 4th...

Man, I don't need 16 ports for anything, but damn ... it's looking very tempting. I could put two Intel gig nics in each PC and team them! The possibilities make me smile.

Now if they would just come out with a 8 or 16 port gig switch that is passivily cooled I would be happy.

Heh, I tried holding out, but gave in and picked up a 16 port as well. Anyone know if there is any way to hack the managed bios into this one?

I don't come 'round these parts much anymore (blessing to some of you, no doubt), but I saw this post and decided to pick up the 24-port switch. I just bought several new servers and all of them have on-board gig, so I thought I might as well get something appropriate for that. It's tiny (several inches narrower than a standard width rack/cabinet), but comes with regular and extended mounting brackets so it can be mounted in my rack with no problems.
P.S. If any of you are interested in breathing at the next LAN, I can bring some canned air for resale. (that's for you, VitaMan)

Hey Bullfrog,
Just an fyi, on the 2616 16port gig switch from Dell I just powered it up and to my surprise quiet, not a single fan to be heard. Just opened it up to confirm, not a single fan inside, just nice big heatsinks...

...and I got something for you bro. Give it to you on Saturday. You will like it. ;)

For those interested it's down to $230 now. Not quite the deal it was last time, but it's still pretty good.
