ok, so i have 1 400 mhz 512 ram stick and i buy another, same company and everything.. but for some reason it looks a little different (they are no name so i blame myself if they're just crap).. anyway, I toss the new one in next to the old one and everything is peachey.. until the computer is on for a little while, after about 5 mins it just turns off.. hmm

then it will get about to starting xp then shut down... it seems like it maybe a heat problem, but then i tried it with just the new chip.. same thing.... tried it with the new chip in GM's pc.. it worked fine for about a half hour, then same thing

so I return it, get a replacement... and get the exact same symptoms with the new one

any ideas? other than the ram is just crap?

Nope. You pretty much nailed it on the head.

Fry's special "no-name" brand, by chance?

Some motherboards are considerably more picky about what RAM they'll accept than others. My advice? www.crucial.com No worries, no stress ~ the stuff will work.....period.

next one i'm goin with I'm thinkin i'm going to go with corsair with the leds on it that show usage.. heh, just for the hell of it

rather funny part of the story, I tell the "tech" at frys what problem it was having, he tosses it into a computer(a good ol ECS mobo i might add), starts the computer and says it works fine, but he'll do me a favor and accept it anyway

ha ha

gotta love people who take the technical approach to a situation

I've got 2 sticks of DDR400, Corsair XMS LowLatency 512 MB. Make me an offer and I might be willing to sell.

I know this is kind of hypocritical to say this considering my case is lit up like studio 54 in 1979, but you should really get the best ram possible instead of the light up kind if you plan on OC'in your computer. Do you want the best looking puter or do you want to push your system as far as possible. Try to find the lowest latency PC4000 availible. I don't know specific models but choosing Corsair or Mushkin would be your best bet.

heh, actually the kind with the LEDs is corsair's low latency ddr 400mhz ;)
