lame.. being IMO sony won more on their market power then any thing even close to consumer choice.
HDdvd players were cheaper, way, way cheaper.. Like 1/4 the price cheaper.. Movie tech wise it's sort of wash between the two formats..
Sony counted PS3s as "bluray" players but that's not really the same as a person going and buying a play to have a player. Still, that let them throw bigger numbers around as stats for number of bluray consumers.
They also have one of, if not the largest movie catalogs being they flatout own some other movie studios and their whole back movie catalog too.. So they could hold hostage a ton of films to "bluray" only..
worst of all this just rewards sony for ONCE again forcing a BS format war. Same way they did DVD +/- R and memory sticks and a bunch of other crap.. I loath them as a company so much
Annoying cause I bought a HD-DVD player, but in the end of it all, even if I don't get any new HD-DVD movies, the player is one badass upconvert player.
Have a couple of the movies that are "HD-DVD" on one side and regular "DVD" on the other. You'd be hard pressed (aside from color clarity) to see the difference in the two. DVD looks slightly more greyed out (lower amount of color data I guess), but the quality of the picture/motion is fantastic.
Aside from format wars, Sony is still one of Intel's most annoying customers with all their proprietary shit like non-standard LCD displays for their laptops causing us to have to write completely customer software to support their mobile products, crap like that. I was hoping that porn would keep HD-DVD alive & well, but we'll see. Even though Toshiba is no longer manufacturing players & pushing for HD-DVD, they are also no longer infringing on smaller companies who are making their own players/software/movies etc. for the HD-DVD format.
