ProtoDrive TM -- HIGH CAPACITY UPGRADEABLE HARD DRIVE
This project brings you a line of disk drives that exceed a Terabyte (TB) in capacity and are upgradeable to even higher capacities as your storage needs grow. These drives use our patent-pending Triple-Attribute encoding technology to store ten times more data on a standard-sized PC hard drive than what is currently possible. ProtoDrives also use our innovative Variable Specification Hardware (VSH) methodology which enables them to be the first and only disk drives in the world that are upgradeable.
The modem
The ProtoModem is a high-speed Dial-Up modem which will provide faster-than-DSL speed to the dial-up user. We will issue a Press Release on this project in December 2003. ProtoModems are upgradeable and will be available in speeds ranging from 1Mbps to 10Mbps. Pricing is expected to be $199 retail for the 1Mbps modem, with each additional 1Mbps upgrade priced at $149 retail.

No kidding!
1 meg dial up????
In order to achieve 1 meg on dial up, I'm pretty sure, you'd have to be using a 4 wire twisted pair circuit.
Last I checked most phone lines in your house have the wiring for it, but only 2 are tied down to the jack.
Edit: I can't imagine hardware being able to make it work, but you never know.

I just spent the last 25 minutes speaking with Kyle Kirby. CTO and CSO ( Chief Science Officer) for Protoscience. This guy is a scientist and has this working now!!! he was a very nice guy and shared some general info on how this is gonna be the lastest and greatest.
These guys has peering agreements with earthlink and other ISP's. This could change the format of Broadband as we know it
O, and by the way. It's not like that " Twisted pairs". It uses a proprietary Pulse Technology. Kyle says he has seen speeds of around 100mbps and is targeting 256. But at a minimu, want to get 10 megs to the household

Considering the great advances made in processing power since the establishment of mainstream TCP, "simply" introducing a new method of compression and packet transfer could dramatically increase the amount of data your average wire can push. The problem would be that everyone already uses one protocol. Perhaps they are going to try to translate from one to the other between your house and the backbone? Seems like that would have a serious impact on latency and packet loss though. Anyone more informed on this kind of thing know?

Protoscience sounds like psuedoscience or a penny stock swindle if you ask me... but in the unlikely event I can get a 3mbs syncronous connection I am so there... but unfortunatly the ISP's will charge a premium for the premium service, say someone has their modem set to 3mbs the ISP's will probably only still allow 1mbs or less, because they can afford to just give bandwidth away.
