HD-DVD was supposed to have a press conference at the year's CES and they canceled.

Helps BlueRay, but still there will be no clear winner for at least another year or more.
I think that neither of these formats will win anytime soon, and it will probally have to be the next gen product that facilitates the move.

Now if one of these two would release a $29.95 player (or even a sub $50.00 player), and keep the costs of the movies at the same price of current DVD's, THAT would make a difference. Get it into Walmart, and Target at that price and you might see a change.

Well it looks like Paramount might be dropping HD-DVD as well and going back to Blu-Ray. The only one left that is Universal and you can guess how long it will take them to switch as well.

I could careless about the format -- I want reasonable prices for players & movies. There is NO way you can tell me it "costs" that much more to produce HD DVD / Blu Ray over a standard DVD. Yeah yeah yeah volumn, etc...but if they want the format to get out there then make it affordable NOW.

But if they make it more affordable it will be harder to purchase a new yacht. Use your head bullfrog.:D

then make it affordable NOW.

econ of scale seems not to apply for entertainment stuff.. CD are still $15 retail and sure you can get Mykul Sings Menudo: Vol 3 for cheap but bigger groups are still $15 when they should be like $10 max.

I going to guess whatever the next gen HD disk is, they will not drop to DVD cost being DVD's are not going to all of sudden "go away" or start to sell for $8.

Most still don't care in anyway about HD anything. I've grown tired of so many news reports trying to say how the move from DVD to HDdisks is JUST like the move from VHS to DVD. Pfffft it's not even close to the same..

VHS sucked on a range of levels, if VHS is a 3 then DVD is an 8 and HD is a 10. Move from 3 to 8 is a lot of levels where as 8 to to 10, not so much.

While there is definitely not as dramatic of a difference between standard dvds & hd/blu-ray, I can't help but feel like this "move forward" is totally being pushed on us. I haven't invested in anything HD yet (not even a TV) but now all these reports of studios dropping support of one HD format is strangely luring my mind into thoughts of investment. God, I am such a consumer whore. (But LOTR HD is so sexy. Damn it all to hell.)

Bah. If you have been able to hold out on HD this long then just keep waiting. Or at least don't waste the time on blu-ray/hd-dvd yet. Regular DVDs look pretty good (unless you get a huge TV maybe--I wouldn't know), and you can get your HD fix with TV... HD players are just way too expensive now, and it would be a bad "investment" to go with one or the other now... You'd be better off going with cans of used grease to prepare for the future :D

Maybe, but the HD-dvd camp is refuting it:

Interesting comparison of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD CES booths. HD-DVD looks deserted...

So there are 5 people sitting around in the blu-ray booth because they set up park benches.... That makes hd-dvd look deserted? I think they both look deserted. Those pics must have been taken at a slow time...

On a side note, I miss the CES. I was down in vegas with a couple buddies once and happened accross the CES. We snuck in with badge holders and some kind of card in them... Saw some cool shit that year. I think it was mostly stuff for the sega genesis and plasma computer displays... Oh, and let's not forget the adult entertainment expo accross the street... Gotta get back there some year.

Why is everyone in such a hurry to be Sony’s bitch when it comes to HD? Between their long history of splitting the market by pushing their proprietary formats, to not even giving a 2nd thought to putting rootkits/spyware on people’s computers, I tend to avoid the company when I can.

I have 63 HD movies now and not a single HD-DVD or Blue-Ray player or Disc. Honestly the best recommendation I can give people is to take the money they would have flushed on either format and upgrade their HTPC instead.
