The software that sits between the operating system and a PC's hardware hasn't changed much in decades. Now, Phoenix Technologies wants to introduce greater security, usability and copy protection.

Phoenix, one of the biggest makers of BIOS software, has released the first entry in a line of next-generation products that it promises will drive utility computing and prevent unauthorized users from misusing protected intellectual property.

DRM in the bios is a bad idea.

Overhauling the bios is a little lame too.. modern operating systems don't touch it once they are booting. If anything the whole thing should be thrown away and replaced with something more modern.

I think at this point, Consumers have more authority to dictate format than the industry does. It wasn’t the industry that got mp3 started, and now it’s the de-facto standard. I really don’t see a company going “Hey, you’re going to use our new DRM enabled format now”. If it pisses people off, they probably aren’t going to use it.

The consumers have alot of power but they also have alot of apathy. The apathy is what I'm afraid of.

I can see people rolling over because the industry dangles shiny objects in their face, like the chance to buy the newest Britney Spears song in exchange for buying into drm.
