Ok I am getting ready to install a linux partition on my system. I was wondering what distribution you guys recommend. Personally I am thinking of messing with Mandrake first.

Try RedHat or Mandrake first

For a newbie, Fedora (http://fedora.redhat.com) might be a good start.
There is a short FAQ on it here also:

Well, I started with Mandrake. I could never get RH 6 to work, so I tried Mandrake and it worked right out of the box. I could never understand how the hell to install apps (I had no clue what dependencies were) on Mandrake so I gave up on Linux. I then went to Solaris for Sparc and that was even more of a PITA. Then I tried Debian and it took a little more to get going, but aptget truly IS your friend if you want to install anything more than the default apps since it takes care of your dependencies. I am running FreeBSD on my laptop now just to mess around and the ports system is pretty nice. SO, in conclusion, I would go with Debian, or FreeBSD and which ever, you go with, just go buy a good book and get runnin.
OH, just remembered, I would go with a seperate HDD or PC just to keep things simple. Formatting with the *NIX fdisk is a little bit of a pain and sometimes it has been hard to get rid of the *NIX partitions in my experience.
If you have any questions, give me a buzz....

Mandrake is going to be a no go considering that they want you to buy a software package in order to get ATI drivers. So fuck them. I am trying to get away from the microsoft mentality ya know. I don't like Fedora/the new Red Hat either, they are targeting corporations to heavily now. RH has completly forgotten their roots in my opinion. I think Debian is going to be the way to go for me. Eventually I plan on running slackware however.
I allready had an installation in mind when I originally partitioned my drive... I have one NTFS partition a Fat32 partition and 10 gigs of unpartitioned space... Unfortunately I don't have another puter to completely play with at this point. Just a side note I am familiar with command lines. I am not like half the world that started using computers when win95 was released. I love and miss the original MS DOS...

Sounds like you have a plan, man. I think that you will be pleased with either distro - both seem to have a pretty large following. I find that it is nice to have a book to help you get started with the install for any distro and then let the Google machine take over once you start getting error messages.
Post back once you get up and running and let us know how it goes.

What do you mean you don't like Fedora? Redhat has forsaken their roots?
Fedora is a community project now. It is more free/enthusiast oriented than the Redhat distro was before. Lots of people seem to like it also.

Hey "Modfather" just to let you know Linux us not a browser but an operating system... Tyhe King of all Mods is not using Microsoft OS's... get with the program and pick stability and security over eye candy and bloatware.

In my opinion because Red Hat is focusing their resources on enterprise edition... which is selling out to corporate America IMHO.
However I do stand corrected because the Fedora project is now a creature of it's own, which will probably make it one of the best distros....
My Internet connection died at 3:00AM on Thursday and was just revived now... So I still haven't finished downloading the ISO's. I actually have to start all over again. Maybe I am going to go with Fedora only because the mirrors are faster for Fedora than for any other distro and I am sick and tired of waiting.
