As the subject states, I want to buy a 120 GB hard drive. If anyone out there has one that they want to sell for cheap :) let me know. If I don't hear anything back, I try to fight for one at the Black Friday sales.

Fry's ad is showing 200GB Western Digital w/ 8 meg buffer for $119 after rebate, today only. Day after sale may have similar deals. With the prices the way there are now, you could probably buy one new for less than someone would take for their own.

That is kind of the same thing that I was thinking but I am looking for a HDD under the 137 GB size limit. So, I was hoping that someone out there might be itching to upgrade their 120 to 200 GB... Maybe that was just wishful thinking. :(

Ugh... I imagine that CompUSA is going to be a madhouse for the next couple a days. I think that I'll take my chances at Frys on Friday. Maybe I can get in and out of there in an hour or so. I'm sure they'll have some good deals as well.

This drive was recommended as one for modding the XBox as it can be locked. It's not the fastest drive around, but in the XBox you have no use for the 8mb cache drives.
Oh, on a side note, I think the 137gb limit has been broken in the newer bioses, so you should check to see if there is a update for your modchip.

Ah, this is for an Xobx. Beautiful. A couple questions:
1. What is the best modchip to get? I don't care about Xobx live, as I'll never use it. Just features on the modded Xobx.
2. A WD1200JB drive will work in the Xobx, won't it? And Fangel - what do you mean by "locked" in reference to the Maxtor drive?

1. Interesting. Thanks for the info.
2. Yes, it has, but I am getting a good deal on an older BIOS, so I will be limited to 137. This should be fine since I am ONLY interested in racing games - even 60 GB would probably be overkill.

Well if you have an extra pci slot, most hard drives come with an ide card. So you can still use it in older motherboards

It starts out that way, but I think you'll find the XBox Media Player is one of the coolest things around. Not only can it play your Music MP3's, WMA, QT, and such, but can play Divx, AVI, mpg, raw dvd, and many other formats, plus it has a great picture mode for showing your digital pics. And it does it with either local files or streaming from your home server. It will become your degital media player. Oh you can also use xbox MAME to play almost all the mame rom games as well, so as you can see the bigger the better :)

FAngel: The more that I read about this setup, the more I realize this is going to become WAY more than just something to play games on. It seams like everything that I think to myself "it sure would be kewl if it could do that" has already been done... amazing. I didn't know that you could map network drives - that's awesome. I like to keep all my data on my server so I will definately be using this feature and I have over 100GB of storage left in that box!
Donnie: Unfortuanately no PCI slot here
Enervate: Good lookin' out. Thanks man!

You can post any info regarding x-box modding and usage to your hearts content - posting links or "how to warez) x-box games" is a n0-n0

By locked I mean that with a flick of the switch, the drive can be locked to look just like the original XBox drive, and you could then boot up and play on XBox live. If you dont care about XBox live, then it dosent matter what drive you use. The WD1200JB should work just fine.
I personally like the X-Ecuter 2.2 PRo myself. has a 1mb flash and can hold multiple bios versions, and has the lpt port for easy flashing.
You can order one here:

Plus another 45 minutes round trip driving...
1.5 hours, at $35/hour (30 miles @ .33/mile (which factors in depreciation))... Nope, for the $62 "cost of obtaining discount", I'd rather buy it online.

You forgot four important factors:
1. We were already out getting breakfast already - damn biscuits and gravy with some coffee is THE way to start a Saturday.
2. My oppurtunity cost was zero because I don't work on the weekends so I would NOT be earning $35/hour. Granted, driving my truck down there WAS a bit pricey.
3. What's better than cruising around Fry's picking up assorted goodies for the PC?
4. Don't forget that I have it now, rather than having to wait until the middle of next week.

Yeah, I don't work weekends either -- but, it is a domino effect.
1) Going to Fry's would take away from other crap I have to do.
2) Other crap would have to be done a different day - perhaps on a vacation day
3) I'd rather spend my vacation days doing something like vacation - so that is an indirect cost.
4) Due to the lagging economy (Thanks Dubya!), our company is allowing/requesting that people take up to a week off without pay. This means that if I'm going to "pay" myself $35/hour to take time off (ie, take time off without pay to have more vacation), I'm damn well going to enjoy it -- like sailing through the Carribbean on a party cruise ship :)
Note, #4 is not a bad thing. The penalty of changing companies every few years means that I do not get "seniority" and earn loads of vacation time. I've often said I'd rather take a slight pay cut to get more time off -- so, in essence, taking a week off without pay is like taking a 2% pay cut for that extra week of vacation. That is worth it... considering I'm earning more than some coworkers for the same position who have 4-5 weeks vacation compared to my 3 (was hired in the strong economy).
In the end, truth is, I'd rather not have to deal with crowds, stress, angst, etc... just to save a few bucks :) I'll get all my Xmas shopping done in about an hour either online, or do the guy thing and head out Dec 24th and buy it (when the malls are empty except for all the other "typical" males doing their shopping :D)
