OK, you get clearance to buy a 19" to 21" LCD. Say in the price range of $400.00 to $800.00 Which one do you get and why? Please provide a link if you can. I know that Samsung 213t is the shit, but, 1,100 is a little steep

Thanks

Mike

I'd get the 19 ...... Reason is that I don't like 1600x1200 (res most 21's run) and also games look the best running native res.. Errr sep you need a monsters to push 1600x1200 in games and for many it makes everything almost too small..

As much as the 21 LCD IS PIMP, I'd still buy a 19.. also the cost issues is there.. I mean the 19 LCD is HUUUUUGGGGGGGGGEEEEEEEEE when you really start to play on it.. More so if one is not used to it. It's not like it's small and less of a screen being a bigger one comes out.

Ah I'd link to the model I have but ya know it's an older Dell version of the Samsung 19t, some one poncho has and Dell seems not to carry it anymore. Of course the new Dell version they have is pretty pimp too and one can still buy the Samsung 19t at other places..

Plus for you Mike, the newer Dell one sits really high up on it's stand as you like a screen to be.. I'm sure you saw Defiant One's at the 6.5 lan. Yeah I think that's the perfect "Area51 screen" if I was going to pick one for ya.

If gaming is important, get the 19". The 21" so far have slower response times. Dell is selling a 2001FP now w/ a fast pixel response time, but you can only get it w/ a PC for now. So, that's pretty much out. Plus, it's 16x12 ... no game of tomorrow will run that without big $$ vid cards and pretty slow frame rates. And there really is a difference running games in the native res vs a scaled res.

The best bang/$ is the 19", I think.

Get the 1901FP, I don't think you'll be disappointed in the least. Use the extra $bling$ on other cool toys.

Deadlamb (and anyone else),

How does text and other apps look on the Dell? Some reviews indicate that the text quality suffers, but it appears they are just being a little too picky.

Thanks,

The text is perfect to my eyes on my 1800FPs.

Text can look bad on LCDs if you dont have clear type on

Lamb already linked the LCD that I was going to recommend. My buddy at work got one through an employee purchase plan and that thing is AWESOME. Thin bezel, bright display, really clear and better than that I got so excited I gave it a mushroom stamp!!!

DVD movie looked really clear on it too, a suprise for me since every other LCD i've seen look ok at best when running a DVD window at native res.

Thanks for the recommendations... I just picked up the Dell 1901FP. Much appreciated!

Soooo...Hoss, what are you going to do w/your $1K allotment? You guys are getting screwed on the (full retail) prices that you have to pay through the "Employee purchase". If it weren't for the free $$$ it would outright suck ass.

As stated earlier, my 1901FP is PURTY! Text is no problem whatsoever, but I use the digital-in - Don't know what it looks like using analog.

The adjustable-height is a waaaaay cool feature, particularly since it seems like my desk isn't the same height as the tables at the LAN parties, and I tend to sit rather tall anyway...

Analog in on my 18" Dell and text looks just fine.

I run analog on my Dell-rebranded 171N and it annoys me, I can see noise in black spaces and screen refreshes. Have to sit there and tune it to not screw up the image even.

I really wish I had sprung for the 19" model just so I could have gotten DVI.

Just curious... if the 19" is (probably) 1280x1024, and the 21" is 1600x1200...

Then it seems to me that if you run a game "native" at 1280, the image will be around the same size. It will be about 13.5 inches tall, instead of about 14.5

Meanwhile, you get the bigger area for non-gaming.

Or am I maybe missing the point -- there there is no such thing as "non-gaming"? :)

Are you suggesting playing the game in 1280x1024 on the 1600x1200 native lcd?

It would look blurry from the stretching unless you could tell the lcd not to stretch, like you can with laptops.

Yeah -- I was assuming you could have the image only run native (non-stretched)... as in black area around the picture.

I don't know if that is and lcd feature or maybe a video card feature in the case of dvi. My lcd won't let me tell it not to stretch.

I would think that 1600x1200 would display an 800x600 image nice, since it's an easy resize...

SillyModerator? Now I wonder what newcomer this could be, with admin powers no less.

Have no fear, it was just me... I was out of town and forgot my password, so I used a test account that I remembered. My point still stands, though: Shouldn't stretching 800x600 out to 1600x1200 look fine? It's not like you have to interpolate any pixels, it's just a simple matter of drawing 4 pixels for every one...

The 19" Samsung 191T is sweeeeeeeeet! Very nice screen, clean, bright, and sharp, very small bezel that comes in either silver or black. Like Donnie said, with Cleartype turned on, the text looks very clear and easy to read - otherwise small text looks grainy. I've had absolutely zero ghosting with this thing, too. Game play is very good in any resolution, though I wouldn't use anything but 1280 for anything else.

If you have any reason to view your screen at 1024 wide x 1280 tall (as opposed to the standard 1280wx1024h), the 191T can rotate 90 degrees. It comes with the software to do this, but WinXP with an NVidia card/drivers has this option, too.

My $.02 :)
