is fubard. Was doing some homework and went to take the usb pen outta the laptop. I get near to my computer front ports to plug it in. As soon as the metal contacts with metal, I heard feedback from the speakers and I think WTF thats wierd. Light on usb pen doesnt light up, another wtf. I try to deactivate the screen saver and it looks like it froze. I press reset and think nothing of it.

Computer doesnt even post, no beeps at all. Fans and stuff power up, I can hear the hd spinning. I reset the cmos and reboot again. Nothing at all. I if the usb had any connection with what happened but its a damn coincidence. I dont even know how its possible, I just had plugged it in from laptop to computer 20 minutes ago a few times to transfer some stuff

Holy shit Im going to cry. Im not a tard in computers, dont consider myself smart but I can get around pretty well

Oh and when I try to turn it off, the power button doesnt even work. I have to turn off the psu switch. Im guessing something went wrong with the motherboard but its pretty new.. argh off to go beat up the dog (jk)

What mobo is it? If you need help debugging it, you're more than welcome to give me a buzz tomorrow. Just drop me a PM sometime.

I dunno, sometimes my rheostat setup for the fans will give off an ominous spark and shut off the computer, but unplugging the atx power connecter for the mobo seems to fix it. This different i suppose, and when i think about it the last time i had a comp that would spin fans but not do anything else it was indeed dead.

Sounds like your flux capacitor might have blown out!

Really though, it's not unheard of for a board (south controller specifically) to blow out when plugging in a USB device. USB is controlled from the I/O Controller Hub or Southbridge (depending on what chipset you're using). If there is a short from power to one of the USB I/O signals, you "could" burn it up.

All the power up sequences start at the ICH/SB also, so if something went wrong there, you won't be able to power up or down correctly. There's a signal running around the board called PWRGOOD_N or Power Good signal. An easy way to test the functionality of that signal is to power up the system, then hold the power switch for the 6 second off timer. That timer will trigger PWRGOOD, so if that doesn't happen, you've got a problem starting right there.

Hope this isn't sounding like Greek to you.

Its an Abit IC7 with 875 chipset

I think I understood. I turned it on and held the power button for a few seconds. It turned back off

How likely is it that something besides the mb is also messed up, like the cpu or vid card?

It's possible but I doubt it. You won't really know till you try it out.

If it was the CPU I expcet that the computer would still turn on, but it would show a problem with the CPU...."No CPU Present" and such.

If it was Video I would expect the computer to turn on and boot, but the graphics would be crap if they worked at all.

Noo, Im convinced something is wrong with the mobo, but I meant is it possible that the motherboard + cpu/vidcard or anything else are gone?

OHHHHHHHH.....LOL
I R stoopid

You'll have to wait till you get another MB to find out I think.

Probably redundant question, but have to tried it with just the basic shit like one stick of mem, vid card and that's it? Nothing (no IDE or floppy) connected? Or if you want to cause more headache you can rip it out of the case and try it open and not touching anything.

Thanks for the offer of help fish but I think Imma just rma the board. Seems less of a hassle since I can cross ship

It's no problem. I fixed BluKing's board once, I figured I could probably fix yours too. ;)
